The original Bioshock is one of the most influential video games of all time. Its mix of brilliant gameplay mechanics and captivating storytelling make it a truly unforgettable experience to play. Given how long ago the first Bioshock came out and how iconic it remains, one question is becoming increasingly relevant: Will Bioshock get a next-gen remaster on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S?
Although the game has been ported to various consoles since its original 2007 release, it has yet to get a remake from the ground up. Given the massive leaps in graphical capabilities that video games have seen in that time, seeing a ground-up remake of Bioshock could be like seeing it for the first time again.
Many of the most iconic titles in gaming history have gotten or are getting ground-up remakes. In recent years, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Final Fantasy 7 Remake have all been released to similar, if not more, critical acclaim than the originals. Where, then, is Bioshock?
Hype for the upcoming Demon's Souls remake, a launch title for the PlayStation 5, is rather high, and a Bioshock remaster could arguably garner even more excitement. Bioshock's gameplay and story redefined the gaming industry for decades: The idea of having one active weapon in one hand and a "plasmid" superpower in the other hand is a gameplay mechanic that has been used ad nauseam since Bioshock's release (although plenty of games, like Skyrim, have gotten it right), and its audio log-based storytelling has appeared in a similar number of successors.
Because of the sheer power of its notability and critical acclaim, a Bioshock remake is extremely likely. Bioshock, Bioshock 2, and Bioshock: Infinite were all met with incredible critical praise - and they all sold well. A remake or another installment in the franchise would likely continue that trend. Because of the aforementioned remakes that have earned glowing reviews over the past few years, there is little doubt that a Bioshock remake will join them.
As the next-gen consoles begins to reign these next few years, gamers from around the world will be given a bevy of brand new experiences. Still, returning to the best hits is always going to be a winning formula. Because of that, all of the greatest games of the last few generations have a solid chance of being remade. Bioshock is at the top of that long list.
