Will Smith announced that the much anticipated Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special would release early on HBO Max. Twenty-four years after the popular sitcom was canceled, fans have not given up on the series that made Smith a bigger star than anyone could have possibly ever imagined.
When The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air first aired on NBC in 1990, Smith was known primarily as a rapper. As the series became increasingly popular, Smith started his move away from music and toward an arguably more stable career as an actor. New generations can enjoy The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, thanks to streaming services. But even without the addition of new fans, the series has managed to maintain a hold over the public in a way few others have. Naturally, in an age of nostalgia-fueled reunions, the cast of Fresh Prince would eventually reunite on-screen in some capacity, so it wasn't a huge shock when HBO Max announced a reunion show was in the works.
Now, it turns out the reunion special will premiere earlier than expected. Will Smith shared the good news on his official Instagram account, revealing the special will release on November 18 (today) - a day earlier. Insisting that he told the streaming service to “give the people what they want,” Smith also provided a short but sweet teaser trailer for fans to enjoy alongside the news. The reunion will release on the streaming service at 8 pm ET/5 pm PST
Despite the tremendous hardships that 2020 has brought to people worldwide, it has proven a strong year for The Fresh Prince. Along with the reunion special, a dramatic reboot of the series received an unprecedented two-season deal with NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock. Though that series takes a far less humorous look at the exploits of Will as he navigates his way through life in Bel-Air, it is sure to bring in a wide range of viewers – from die-hard fans of the original series to those familiar with its original YouTube trailer. And as far as the upcoming reunion special goes, it looks as though fans will be treated to laughter and tears – something the original series was also capable of doing.
Hopefully, the early arrival of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion will live up to the hype surrounding it. There have been many times when reunion specials of popular programs had the opposite effect on fans. It’s challenging to make something new occupy the same level as something that fans consider to be a classic. Given Smith’s fame, however, as well as the staying power of the show, there’s a good chance for this reunion's success.
