Mandalorian Fans Call On Disney To Fire Gina Carano For Anti-Mask Tweets

Gina Carano, who plays Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, has earned the ire of fans of the show who are calling for her to be fired after tweets supporting unfounded voter fraud theories and ridiculing mask use. The Disney+ series set in the Star Wars universe follows the titular bounty hunter, played by Pedro Pascal, who is tasked with escorting "The Child" better known as Baby Yoda. The little tike took the Internet by storm upon his reveal, though fans have learned how tough it can be to love an alien after seeing him eat the eggs of an endangered species. Through the eyes of the lone wolf protagonist and his plucky companion, The Mandalorian offers a new angle on the Star Wars universe beyond the war between the Jedi and the Sith.

The space western is directed by Jon Favreau and is far and away the most popular original program on Disney's relatively young streaming platform. It's no surprise, given Star Wars' immense popularity the world over, but The Mandalorian seemed to truly strike gold from the outset as a cultural phenomenon. Only two seasons in, its characters are so recognizable and beloved that SpaceX took Baby Yoda to space. Along the way, the Mandalorian meets a number of foes and a few friends, including Rebel-soldier-turned-mercenary Cara Dune, who has been praised as a strong female role model compared to the likes of Princess Leia due to Cara's independence and profession.

In two tweets, Carano lampooned mask use and fanned the flames of baseless conspiracy theories regarding voter fraud in the 2020 U.S. Presidential election. In the midst of the vote-counting process, Carano supported the notion that voter fraud had taken place, laying out general guidelines to "Make Voter Fraud end in 2020."  More recently, Carano shared a satirical image of a news report claiming that Democratic leaders recommend wearing a blindfold as well as a mask "so we can't really see what's going on." A number of fans have expressed their anger with the tweets using the hashtag #FireGinaCarano. See Carano's tweets below:

It's not the first time Carano has come under fire from fans on Twitter. After being urged to put her gender pronouns in her bio, an action typically seen as a sign of solidarity with the trans community, Carano wrote "boop/bob/beep." She later qualified that she had nothing against the trans community but added that it needed "less abusive representation." It's no secret that Carano has generally endorsed right-wing political opinions that many of her fans apparently disagree with, best exemplified by Carano's advertisement of her use of Parler, a generally right-wing social media platform.

To be frank, it seems quite unlikely that Disney will fire Carano. Fans have drawn comparisons to James Gunn's firing from Guardians of the Galaxy for very off-color jokes on such topics as pedophilia and 9/11 that he shared on Twitter many years prior. Gunn was of course subsequently rehired, but if Gunn's firing is used as a model for where Disney draws the line, it seems very unlikely Carano will follow him. The CDC unequivocally recommends mask use to help prevent the spread of coronavirus and federal election officials have found virtually no voter fraud nor foul play in the ballot counting. But the fact of the matter is that however much fans may disagree with Carano's political views and however unfounded the theories Carano is lending credence to are, they are still just that: political views shared by millions across the United States. It's a safe bet that The Mandalorian will not be parting ways with Cara Dune anytime soon.
