Two and a Half Men's reign as the most popular comedy on television came crumbling down when Charlie Sheen derailed the entire show with his off-screen issues in the middle of season 8. The show decided to fire Sheen, rework the show completely, and cast a completely new lead.
The new lead happened to be Ashton Kutcher, who played the character of Walden Schmidt, a billionaire who ends up buying the beach house in Malibu after he gets divorced and decides to keep Alan around because he's lonely and doesn't have any friends. Audiences didn't respond kindly to the new premise and the show's ratings dropped from steady 8's to barely 6's (according to IMDb ratings).
10 What A Lovely Landing Strip, Episode 11 (6.1)
As stated, the character of Walden had moved into the beach house because his wife wanted a divorce. It took Walden a long time but he finally accepted his new life and started to date other women in order to move on - the only problem is that his ex-wife, Bridgette, decides during this episode that she can't sign the divorce papers and that she wants Walden back.
Walden is tempted at first, but he has a new girlfriend, Zoey, whom he chooses to pursue instead of moving backward and asks Bridgette to leave... so she drives her car through his living room wall.
9 Palmdale, Ech, Episode 19 (6.1)
Alan had been dating his girlfriend Lyndsey for quite some time when he finally got introduced to her mother during this episode. The three of them join Alan's mother for dinner and the two mothers really seem to hit it off - so much so that they end up leaving together after dinner and the episode ends ambiguously regarding whether or not the two grandmothers became a couple.
Meanwhile, Walden is stuck hanging out with Jake and Eldridge and offers to drive them to a party - only for them to give Walden the wrong address.
8 Why We Gave Up Women, Episode 22 (6.1)
When Alan is finally told by Walden that he has to officially move out of the beach house for good, Alan ends up having a heart attack and winds up in the hospital. While there, and under sedation, Alan gets visited by the spirit of his dead brother (played by Kathy Bates) who tells him that he needs to stop being such a leech and stand on his own two feet.
Despite just having had a heart attack and still being broke, Alan checks himself out of the hospital and gets his own place (which is a dump) in order to prove himself. Charlie returns in another vision and laughs at Alan for falling for his plan, which was to finally get Alan out of his house.
7 Frodo's Headshots, Episode 9 (6.2)
This was the episode where the writers truly transitioned the show from it's old-era to the new one. Alan gets sent to a stress clinic after he has a mental breakdown and returns to find that everything that could possibly go wrong in his life has, only making him more and more depressed.
However, after a long series of events that result in Herb shooting Alan, it's all revealed to be a dream, and Alan is shown still lying in his bed in the stress clinic. He finally makes it back to the beach house (for real) and while he was in the clinic Walden has changed the entire interior of the house. Alan admits that it's no longer his brother's beach house at all - but that he's still staying.
6 A Possum on Chemo, Episode 14 (6.2)
While Alan may have been dating Lyndsey for a while, the couple had several long breaks in their relationship. This episode took place during one of those breaks when Alan finds out that Lyndsey has been dating an attractive man in his 20's and Alan immediately gets jealous.
However, he ends up winning Lyndsey back simply because she gets tired of having to keep up her appearance and hide things about herself from the young man.
5 Oh look! Al-Qaeda! Episode 24 (6.2)
Audiences got to see Jake grow up from the tender age of ten and in the ninth season finale, they finally got to see him graduate high school. Unfortunately, Jake wasn't going to college and he had no plans for his future, so Walden generously gave the young man a chance at his new company... which Jake immediately screwed up.
Left with no other option but to get a job, Jake ends up at the mall where he meets an Army recruiter... who then talks Jake into signing up for the Army. The season ends with Jake heading off to boot camp, and Walden being severely worried.
4 The Duchess of Dull-in-sack, Episode 15 (6.3)
By this point in the season, Walden had gotten serious with his new girlfriend, Zoey, but she still had yet to introduce Walden to her daughter (out of fear of moving too fast). Not only that, but their sex life had gotten lackluster, prompting Walden to suggest that they eat some pot-brownies to get them in the mood.
Unfortunately, it only makes them paranoid and the evening gets ruined when they run off into the night. Luckily, Walden shows up at Zoey's the next day and ends up meeting her daughter. The two hit it off, which instantly makes Walden 1000x more attractive to Zoey, and their sex-life returns to being hot-and-heavy.
3 Slowly and in a Circular Fashion, Episode 13 (6.4)
As mentioned earlier, Walden might have been a billionaire, but it was actually his company that was worth a billion dollars. When Walden got divorced, his ex-wife (a member on the board of the company) tried to scheme with Walden's mother (another member on the board) to take control of the company away from Walden due to him spending/losing too much money.
Walden makes a strategic move and puts Alan on the board (which allows him to have the majority vote) and manages to save his company by doing so.
2 Sips, Sonnets and Sodomy, Episode 16 (6.4)
Alan and Walden find themselves between a rock and a hard place when a storm traps them, and their two girlfriends, at the beach house. Things only get worse when the two girls start to get catty and insult each other, leaving the men to either try and smooth things over or take sides and cause even more tension in the house.
Eventually, stuck with no good options, Alan and Walden decide to head out into the storm rather than stay at the house with the feuding women (which somehow results in the women getting along).
1 Thank You for the Intercourse, Episode 8 (6.4)
Episode 9 may have been the episode that Alan came back from the stress clinic, but before he got admitted there in the first place he had to go through episode 8. Alan is truly starting to grieve the death of his brother when he admits that he would have given anything to be like Charlie - this revelation causes a mental-snap in Alan's mind and immediately makes him believe that he has actually turned into his brother.
For the rest of the episode, Alan acts like a drunken-womanizer, adopts all of Charlie's old mannerisms, and gets so bad that Walden eventually tricks him into getting dropped off at the stress clinic (telling him it's the Bellagio).
