Better Call Saul Season 1 Filming Had A Negative Impact On Bob Odenkirk

Bob Odenkirk revealed that filming Better Call Saul season 1 had a negative impact on him. The series, a spinoff prequel centered around Odenkirk's character from Breaking Bad, follows scumbag lawyer Saul Goodman before he got wrapped up in Walter White's drug empire. The series follows his transformation from plucky Jimmy McGill to a full-blown criminal lawyerBetter Call Saul also stars Jonathan Banks, Rhea Seehorn, and Giancarlo Esposito.

The show regularly features characters from Breaking Bad as it explores Saul's rise and fall. The show has received critical acclaim, with some wondering if it's better than its predecessor. With five seasons and 50 episodes under its belt, the series is gearing up to shoot its sixth season in early 2021. The sixth season is slated to be the show's last.

In a new interview with Inside of You, Odenkirk shed light on the early behind-the-scenes process. Odenkirk revealed that filming the first season wore him down because of his role as the main character. The actor says that he was tasked with memorizing so much, with little time in between shooting episodes to catch up on the lines he needed to remember, that it became overwhelming. Eventually, Odenkirk reached a point where he asked if he could say no to a call time, to which a crew member said that everyone would be thankful if he did so.

Yes, [I've hit a wall]. In the first season, well first of all, I was in every scene. Except for one episode I wasn't in at all. But in every other thing, I was in every scene. It was f*cking nuts.

It's no surprise that Odenkirk experienced this. On top of the fact that shooting schedules for television shows can be incredibly demanding, the transition from Breaking Bad to Better Call Saul was a big one for the actor. In Breaking Bad, Saul is a relatively minor character. While he plays a massive part in the plot, his character appeared in substantially fewer scenes. With Better Call Saul centered entirely around his character, the increased workload was a given. His initial treatment, however, was not.

Luckily for everyone involved, Odenkirk eventually stepped in and spoke out against the demanding working conditions, and it seems like it paid off. Odenkirk has continued to receive accolades for his performance, and so have the rest of those involved. Better Call Saul has only increased in popularity over time, thanks in part to Odenkirk's committed performance and the talents of the storytellers behind the scenes, who also worked on Breaking Bad. When the series concludes, it will go down as one of the greatest prequel shows of all time, thanks in part to Odenkirk.
