Doctor Strange: Scott Adkins Regrets Taking a Role as a Villain

Actor Scott Adkins regrets taking on a villainous role in 2016's Doctor Strange because of what it means for his MCU future. Directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange tells the origin story of Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), which sees him go from narcissistic surgeon to selfless sorcerer following a devastating accident. The film was generally met with positive reviews upon its release, with much of the praise going to the reality-bending visuals and Cumberbatch's performance. Cumberbatch will next be seen in 2021's still-untitled Spider-Man 3 before stepping into his second solo movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

In Doctor Strange, Adkins plays the part of a secondary antagonist named Lucian, one of the zealots who follow Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) in his plot to bring Dormmamu into the world. Though Adkins doesn't have many lines (if any at all), he does get in a rousing fight with Cumerbatch's Stephen. Audiences will recall their astral forms battling above an operating room; the scene culminates with Stephen electrocuting Lucian and taking both him and his astral form out.

In a new interview with The Illuminerdi (where he also discussed his experience playing Deadpool in the much-maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Adkins explained why he regrets playing Lucian in Doctor Strange. It has nothing to do with the character himself or the content of the film, but more about what it means for Adkins' future within the MCU. "That is one role that I regret taking," Adkins said. "I wish I would have held out and not taken the role, because now I feel I’ve blown my chance to be in the Marvel [Cinematic] Universe."

As Adkins won't be returning for Multiverse of Madness seeing as his character is dead, it can be easy to see why he would think his time in the MCU is finished. However, there have been several actors who have appeared in multiple MCU projects as different characters. For example, Michelle Yeoh had a cameo appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and she'll take on a more prominent role in next year's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Most recently, Gemma Chan discussed how she managed to be cast in Eternals despite playing someone else in Captain Marvel.

All of that is to say that Adkins still has a chance for a bigger MCU future. His part as Lucian was small enough that bringing him back as someone else might not be too jarring for audiences. Additionally, his skill as a martial artist means he would be perfectly suited for the MCU's action scenes (as Doctor Strange can attest). With the MCU continuously growing, there could very well be plenty of opportunities for Adkins to return in the future. He'll just have to keep his spirits up and his eyes open.
