Schitt’s Creek became one of the most beloved comedy series ever, but it’s been a while since the pilot episode aired back in 2015. Because of this, even big fans of the series might not remember all the things that happened during the first episode.
While the series just got better as it went along, the pilot episode set up a lot of information about the characters and included enough backstory to get things going. There were actually some pretty wild things that occurred in the episode.
10 Roland is the reason they only have two rooms
When the Rose family first arrives in Schitt’s Creek they head to the hotel where they are being comped to live as owners of the town. While Stevie is working there and her family owns the motel, Roland is the one who gets to decide how much the town itself will pay for them to get free rooms.
He decides that they can have two rooms, even though he says they should really only get one. This is why Alexis and David have to share.
9 The inside of the Rose manor is shown
While almost all of the series, except for a few exceptions, takes place in the town of Schitt’s Creek, the first scene of the series takes place in Rose's mansion.
Fans see them being raided by the government and their assets taken away. This scene gives insight into the amount of money and the lifestyle the family was living before everything went wrong for them financially.
8 The reason why the Rose family lost all their money
While fans all know that the Rose family made their money mostly from Johnny’s business, Rose Video, it’s easy to forget how they lost their money in the first place.
Fans learn in the first episode that they had entrusted their business manager, Eli, with their finances. He was supposed to be paying their taxes, but instead, he stole their money and then went to the Cayman Islands leaving the Rose’s to pick up the pieces.
7 Moira is most worried about bringing her wigs
Anyone who loves the show knows that Moira is really attached to her wigs. While she also cares about her other belongings and things like clothes, she cares about her wigs the most.
So, it’s not really surprising that when the government gives the family a brief amount of time to gather some of their personal belongings, she is most worried about taking her wigs with her. She even has her housekeepers help her pack them.
6 Alexis says one of the funniest jokes from the show
While this pilot episode mostly deals with setting up the plot of the show and introducing viewers to the main characters, there are still some memorable moments and funny lines.
Alexis and David fight over who is going to get which bed, and David wants Alexis to get the bed closest to the door so he won’t get murdered first. This prompts Alexis to say, “No, you get murdered first for once, David!”
5 Roland had sexual relations in every room in the hotel in high school
Roland can be one of the most obnoxious characters on the show, and while the Rose family has a lot of issues, Roland doesn’t have a lot of respect or boundaries.
He shows a lot about himself and his gross tendencies when he reveals in the first episode that he used to sleep around in high school in the Schitt’s Creek Hotel.
4 Alexis believes that Stavros is coming to save her
The secondary plot of the pilot is Alexis believing that Stavros, her boyfriend at the time, is going to come and get her on his private jet. She plans on leaving the rest of her family to their plight and to go back to living her fabulous life as before.
Her family isn’t pleased with this at all, but one of the funniest moments is when Alexis talks about how Stavros is waiting for Mary-Kate Olsen to be done using his jet.
3 Roland takes their motel room doors
Roland definitely doesn’t make a good impression in this episode, and he’s even less likable here than in most of the series. After Johnny gets frustrated with the fact that Roland won’t leave their hotel room, he yells at him to leave.
Roland, being the immature person he is, then takes the front doors off of their hotel rooms in punishment.
2 Moira accuses Stevie of stealing her earrings
After Roland takes the doors, Moira is convinced that they’ve had their stuff stolen. She can’t find her diamond earrings, and she’s distraught about this.
She then accuses Stevie of stealing from her since Stevie is the only one around. Stevie isn’t impressed by this, but she responds in her typical dry humor way by saying she has to hurry to make it to the pawnshop in time.
1 Stavros doesn’t show up because he goes to Diddy’s white party instead
Obviously, Alexis doesn’t get saved by her boyfriend. Instead, he breaks up with her and tells her that he can’t come because he has to go to Diddy’s white party.
We also learn in this scene that Alexis has had many other boyfriends named Stavros, and we hear that that particular Stavros had broken up with her five times before.
