Whether it’s Christopher Nolan’s vision on the caped crusader, '80s sci-fi adventures, or Peter Jackson’s fantasy epics, there are a ton of incredible trilogies in cinema. However, at the same time, there are trilogies that were either ruined by further sequels or an incredibly disappointing third entry.
While countless sequels for movies like Pirates of the Caribbean keep getting made, there are some incredible properties with just two great movies under their belts only to lay dormant afterward. Between characters being so great that they need to be revisited and other stories that could be further explored, these are the series that desperately need to become a trilogy.
10 Blade Runner
Even though it wasn’t looked at as the masterpiece it is when it was originally released, Blade Runner is one of the best movies directed by Ridley Scott. And though it was just a standalone movie for a long time and there weren’t even any expectations from fans for a sequel, Denis Villeneuve took the franchise in a new direction with Blade Runner 2049.
He expanded the universe unlike anybody could have ever imagined. The sci-fi epic even eluded to a sequel at several points in the movie, but given its poor performance at the box office, just like its predecessor, a potential third movie is left up in the air.
9 Anchorman
Being arguably Will Ferrell’s best character, Ron Burgundy became instantly iconic and massively quotable. There wasn’t even a plan to make a sequel, but thanks to huge demand from fans, the character returned nine years later with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
What kept the series fresh almost a decade later was that it was set in a different time period and had Burgundy and company hilariously trying to understand the concept of 24-hour news. There’s a sequel based in the '90s begging to be made to round out the series. There should be a new Anchorman movie every 10 years seeing Ron and his co-anchors facing a new threat in the industry. It’ll never get old.
8 The Incredibles
Brad Bird is on record as saying that he had only planned to make a sequel to The Incredibles if he had an idea for a story that was just as good, if not better than the original movie.
Well, that finally happened in 2018, as the Pixar superhero movie improved on the original in almost every way possible. There are a lot of ideas that could make a third film the best in the trilogy, but as it took 14 years for the first sequel to show up, chances are it’ll be a while until fans see another installment, and that’s if it happens at all.
7 It
Though he spawned a ton of hilarious memes, Bill Skarsgärd’s take on Pennywise was creative and terrifying, and though the series was satisfyingly wrapped up in It: Chapter 2, there were a ton of things from the book that wasn’t used for the movies.
The stuff that wasn’t used may have been completely ridiculous, such as Pennywise taking the form of classic movie monsters and his arch-nemesis being a turtle called Maturin, but it’d be magnificent to see that actually get made. If Peter Jackson can get three movies out of one book with The Hobbit, then the same can be done for It, as the book is massive.
6 Jump Street
The end credits of 22 Jump Street, which is one of the reasons why the sequel is arguably better, shows what the series would be like if they continued making bi-annual Jump Street movies, as it joked about the duo being undercover in medical school in 23 Jump Street.
Though it was clearly making light of the series’ own drawbacks, as the sequel was basically the same as the first movie, only in college instead of high school, it would be incredible to see the two trying to uncover drug dealers while haphazardly performing surgery.
5 Monsters Inc.
Monsters Inc. is a perfect animated movie, and as a standalone film, it couldn’t be better. It’s sequel, Monsters University, is actually a prequel. While it's a fun follow-up, it sacrifices a lot of the series’ heart for more laughs and it doesn’t have the same impact as the original.
As MU’s predecessor had such a powerful and ambiguous ending, Monsters University was a missed opportunity and left audiences unfulfilled with it being a prequel. With a third movie, the series could right that wrong and reunite Sully with Boo, which is ultimately all fans want to see.
4 The Raid
The Raid is one of the best, if not the best, action movies of the 2010s, as it follows a group of police officers who raid a high rise building occupied by a crime lord, and it’s full of incredible stunts and martial arts.
The 2014 sequel is even better, as it expands on the world that the original built and features huge, calculated prison riots, uzi wielding bikers, and about 10 times the amount of knives the original had. Fans have been begging for a third movie for years, and it’d make a perfect trilogy.
3 Hustler/Color of Money
Not many people know that the Martin Scorsese movie Color of Money, which follows a couple of hustlers in the pool scene, is actually a sequel to the 1961 movie The Hustler. There was a 25-year gap between Hustler and Color of Money, so the time since the release of Color of Money isn’t exactly an issue.
The movie could focus on Vincent, played by Tom Cruise, 30 years later, just like how Color of Money focused on Paul Newman’s character, Eddie, 25 years after the release of The Hustler.
2 National Treasure
National Treasure might be an inferior version of the Indiana Jones series, but it’s still a hell of a lot of fun. It has Nicolas Cage being typically Nicolas Cage and Jon Voight in his typically father-type role on a ridiculous adventure full of riddles and illogical but exciting set pieces.
The first movie saw Cage and company stealing the Declaration of Independence, and the second movie saw them literally breaking into the White House. The patriotic series only grew in success when it comes to the box office, and fans have been speculating about a third movie for years.
1 Kill Bill
There have been talks of a third Kill Bill ever since the release of the second movie. Even though the second movie ended by doing exactly what it says on the tin, as the Bride successfully killed Bill, it might seem completely arbitrary to make a third movie, but there are actually a ton of places that Tarantino could take the story.
The Bride had a long history of being an assassin before the beginning of the first movie, and she has irked a lot of people who could seek revenge on her, just like she did.
