One of the benefits of TikTok is how quick and easy it is for creators to add content, including live-streamed videos. However, not everyone who uses the popular video-sharing service is automatically eligible to ‘go live’ and this is especially true for new content creators. For those now considering live-streaming over TikTok, here’s what you need to know.
TikTok is a popular option for many looking to consume video content which makes it an equally popular option for those looking to create content. Once a video is filmed, creators have a wealth of option to add extra value to the video, including adding effects, a voiceover, and more. However, going live is one of the simplest and quickest ways to get content up on any platform, including TikTok.
TikTok Live makes it easy for anyone to livestream and engage with an audience in real time. However, there are some requirements involved before getting started. What is arguably the biggest and the one that’s likely to prove the most problematic for new accounts is the number of followers. TikTok Live is only available to accounts that have already accumulated more than 1,000 followers. That’s not the only requirement either. As an added security measure, although thirteen is the minimum age to sign up for a TikTok account, the platform only allows users that are at least sixteen years of age to use TikTok Live. Furthermore, these restrictions are subject to vary, depending on the country.
As to be expected, TikTok makes going live as easy as possible with the option readily accessible in the app. Simply tap on the “+” sign at the bottom and then tap on the “Live” button to start a broadcast. For reference, if experiencing any issue when attempting to go live, including finding the "Live' button, then it is highly likely the account has yet to met the platform’s criteria for livestreaming. As an example, the “Live” button doesn't show up in the app at all for accounts with less than 1,000 followers.
Although TikTok makes it harder than some other platforms to live-stream, that’s likely to be a good thing. The 1,000 follower requirement is steep, but TikTok has come under a lot of pressure in the past for how it moderates content. Not to mention, it tends to skew to a younger demographic in general. By putting in place higher age and follower restrictions, TikTok is making sure that, by the time a user is live, they are already overly familiar with the platform.
