Tomb Raider 2 Gets Lovecraft Country Director Misha Green

MGM has found a new director for Tomb Raider 2, as Alicia Vikander's sequel lands Lovecraft Country's Misha Green. The popular video game franchise originally received a movie adaptation with Angelina Jolie, but Vikander helped reboot Lara Croft's big-screen adventures in 2018. Directed by Roar Uthaug, Tomb Raider was an underrated moderate hit - earning nearly $275 million worldwide - on mixed reviews. Still, the movie performed well enough for Tomb Raider 2 to move forward.

Progress on Tomb Raider 2 started in 2019 with Amy Jump (Free Fire) hired by the studio to write the sequel. It wasn't long after that the film hired Ben Wheatley as its director and received an early 2021 release date. Despite this momentum, the updates on Tomb Raider 2 went cold. The movie didn't start production in 2020 and eventually lost its 2021 release date altogether. This left plenty of Lara Croft fans wondering about the status of the sequel. Now, it turns out that the film has a brand new director.

According to Deadline, MGM has hired Misha Green to write and direct Tomb Raider 2. Green most recently helped create, write, and direct HBO's sci-fi series Lovecraft Country. She directed the eighth episode of Lovecraft Country, but Tomb Raider 2 will be Green's feature directorial debut. Her other writing credits include UndergroundSons of Anarchy, and Heroes. Green took to Twitter shortly after the story was published to confirm the news:

The addition of Green on Tomb Raider 2 might signal a complete overhaul of the sequel. She's replacing Ben Wheatley, who presumably is tied up with Meg 2 now, and the confirmation she's writing could mean the story is starting from scratch. Green could do some light rewrites on Jump's original script instead. With Green fresh off her directorial debut on one of Lovecraft Country's best consensus episodes, it's no wonder MGM has brought her aboard the Tomb Raider franchise to give it some new life.

Regardless of what reworking is done to Tomb Raider 2 under Green, it is clear that she's quite a fan of the property. The games she references as her favorites are 2006's Tomb Raider: Legend, 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider, and the 2018 sequel Shadow of the Tomb Raider. And based on the emojis she used, Green's Tomb Raider 2 could include mountain climbing, dinosaurs, and a whole lot more. While passion for the source material doesn't always translate to a quality product, it is normally a comforting sign for fans of any specific IP. Hopefully, Green's involvement will go down as one of the instances where a fan of the property delivers a great final product.
