Wonder Woman 1984: 3 Characters Who Deserved Better (& 5 Who Got What They Deserved)

Superheroes don't have an easy life. Besides the fact that they face dangerous opponents on regular basis, they also have to juggle two parts of their life: their superhero activity and personal life. In Wonder Woman 1984, Wonder Woman has to do exactly that when a new crisis appears on the horizon.

Yet Diana isn't the only one who ends up in a less than ideal situation. Wonder Woman 1984 works with multiple notable characters. Some of them have already appeared in the previous movie, Wonder Woman (2017), but others are new. And not all of them got the ending they would have deserved.

8 Got What She Deserved: Asteria

Asteria's presence in the post-credit scene was a great surprise for the fans since Diana presumed she's gone. Asteria was the Amazon warrior who protected the rest of the Amazons from humanity and bought them time to escape to Themyscira. She's also the former owner of the Golden Eagle armor Diana now has at her disposal. It looks like Asteria has lived on Earth for a long time and from her brief scene, she seems happy with her life and with helping the occasional person in need. It was a great nod toward the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, and perhaps Asteria and Diana could team up in the sequel.

7 Got What He Deserved: Simon Stagg

Simon Stagg isn't the most sympathetic character in the film. He insults Maxwell Lord while his young son is still present. To be fair to Stagg, Lord failed to fulfill the promises he gave to Stagg as his investor. And later on, Stagg becomes one of Lord's first victims when Lord uses his new powers against him and causes him to be quite possibly arrested. But considering his character in the comics, it's safe to assume the accusations against him were true, and he deserved to face the consequences of his actions.

6 Deserved Better: The Fake Steve

It's easy to forget what with all the things happening in the movie, all the action scenes, but Steve Trevor doesn't have his body in the film. His body is long gone, so his mind and soul jumps into a random man's body instead. The film never explains who the man is, what's his name, what he does for work. Absolutely nothing.

What's clear, though, is that the handsome random stranger deserves better than for another human to simply take over his body without his consent. As he mentions in the film's finale, the man has friends, and quite possibly also a family or a partner. Yet he's forced to put his life on hold when Steve arrives on the scene.

5 Got What He Deserved: Alistair

Maxwell Lord's son Alistair doesn't have it easy with his dad. Lord is so obsessed with getting his business off the ground and becoming influential and powerful that he forgets to be there for his son. As a result, they don't seem to be too close. In the end, though, Alistair still cares for his dad and wishes to be with him. He gets his wish eventually when Maxwell abandons his mad quest for power and goes to save Alistair's life instead. He then breaks down in front of his son and promises to make amends in the future.

4 Got What He Deserved: Maxwell Lord

It doesn't happen every day that a villain in a superhero film sees that he made a mistake and turns things around. Maxwell Lord is obsessed with getting as much power as possible, but when he realizes he's about to destroy the world and kill his son, he renounces all the wishes and goes to save his child instead. The film leaves questions unanswered by not showing how Maxwell was punished for his actions, if at all, but it's a good move that he got a shot at redemption nonetheless.

3 Deserved Better: Barbara Minerva

DCEU has many different types of villains. Barbara Minerva (later Cheetah) whom Diana befriends soon after they meet for the first time belongs among tragic villains. Barbara just wants to have friends, someone who'll support her, be there for her.

But people mostly overlook her and barely remember she's there. As a result, Barbara makes a dangerous wish - to be more like Diana - and she gets more than she bargained for when she loses part of her soul, her humanity and joy.

2 Got What He Deserved: Steve Trevor

The thing some people might forget about Steve Trevor is that he's ultimately a good guy, self-sacrificing guy. When he reunites with Diana again, decades after his death, he's happy because not only he sees Diana but he also gets a glimpse into the modern world he's dreamed of. But when Steve realizes his presence is hurting Diana, possibly killing her, he's willing to let go to once again save the world, help Diana save it. Steve seems content in the end with disappearing again, and it wouldn't be fair to keep him alive at all cost.

1 Deserved Better: Diana Prince

The sad truth is that Diana deserves much better than she got. Not only is she still separated from her family on Themyscira and unable to return, but she also has a lot on her shoulders during the film's run. Diana has to stop Maxwell Lord and stop the world from nuclear disaster. She's forced to fight her friend. And to top it all off, she has to say goodbye to Steve Trevor, the man she loves, for the second time, which once again breaks her heart. Overall, it looks like Diana has found some optimism in the end, but it would be good if life gave her a break every once in a while.
