Warning! Spoilers for Future State: Shazam #2.
In DC's dark future, Shazam is responsible for killing some of his closest allies. While his evil turn is shocking and completely out of character, Shazam is about to get dark new powers that make him even more of a threat to those who used to be closest to him: The magical hero somehow gained the ability to block on the world's greatest telepaths.
DC's Future State initiative takes place in a dark timeline where both new and old heroes and villains emerge. One of the darkest futures belongs to Shazam, as he works with a small group of heroes including Vixen, the new Question, and Jakeem Thunder. Despite being their leader, something is off about him. In the series first issue, it's revealed that Billy and Shazam were split by Neron (the lord of Hell) in an effort to stop Raven from unleashing the four riders of the apocalypse after it was suggested he can't be in two places at once. However, with Billy staying in Hell to prevent evil from escaping, Shazam appeared to be slowly corrupted by agreement. There a number of mysterious deaths, which evidence later shows were committed by the magical hero. But why would he kill his friends?
New previews for Future State: Shazam #2 by Tim Sheridan, Eduardo Pansica, Julio Ferreira, and Marcelo Maiolo, show the evil forces are desperately trying to escape, as Billy Batson is the one person who is standing in their way.
On Earth, things aren't going much better for Billy's other half. His fellow teammate's struggle with what to do with the hero. They know Shazam killed some of their friends and have him locked in a magically reinforced room that could "withstand the strength of Hercules." When Miss Martian, one of the greatest telepaths in the universe, attempts to read his mind - she can't. Powerhouse states "I thought you could read everybody," to which the Martian responds, "me too." Shazam has shown some ability before to fight back against telepaths, but against Miss Martian? It's a whole other level. It explains how Shazam avoided detection during his murder spree.
Vixen interrogates Shazam about the deaths of Jakeem, Creeper, Martian Manhunter, and Deathstroke. When the last panel zooms into his eyes, Shazam sees Vixen and one of the beasts currently locked up with Billy. Is this a hallucination or does Shazam now have the power to see the secret darkness lurking in the shadows? Whatever the answer is, it doesn't bode well for everyone involved.
Shazam clearly isn't in control of his actions as Neron - or some other force has been controlling him to commit the deadly attacks. With the cover teasing the return of Raven, it's likely that things for Shazam are about to get worse before they get any better. As for his teammates, without the ability to read his mind, they're pretty much completely in the dark about what's going to happen next - which surely won't be pretty. Future State: Shazam #2 is in comic stores later this week.
