Space Sweepers 2: Release Date & Story Details | Screen Rant

Space Sweepers could be a huge streaming hit for Netflix, so what's the current status of Space Sweepers 2? Directed by Jo Sung-hee, the 2021 South Korean space opera is the first of its kind, following a group of futuristic junk collectors who protect a humanlike android from a greedy business mogul. Since releasing in February 2021, Space Sweepers hasn't been a major critical hit yet, but the viewership numbers will ultimately determine if a sequel gets made.

In Space Sweepers, crew members aboard the craft Victory collect and sell space junk in 2092. The cast playing the junkers includes Song Joong-ki as Tae-ho, Kim Tae-ri as Captain Jang, Jin Seon-kyu as Tiger Park (Jin Seon-kyu), and Yoo Hae-jin as the voice of a Victory robot named Bubs. Meanwhile, James Sullivan (Richard Armitage) plans for a second space revolution after forming a new home for humanity on Mars. Specifically, he hopes to use an android named Dorothy (Park Ye-rin) to obliterate planet Earth and thus make his "Eden" more appealing. When Dorothy shows up on the vessel Victory, the crew members look for potential buyers while forming a bond with the little "fart machine."

Much of the conflict in Space Sweepers involves Tae-ho's backstory. He plans to sell Dorothy to an organization called the Black Foxes and then use the money to locate his missing daughter. Tae-ho's motivations change, however, upon learning about Sullivan's evil plan, one that threatens the space sweepers' very existence. The final half of the Netflix film explores the focal crew's mission to keep Dorthy at a safe distance from Earth, as Sullivan wants to explode an intergalactic location known as The Factory, which will then set off Krypton-like waves and blow up the all-powerful nanobot android Dorothy, which will incidentally destroy Earth. Here's what to expect for Space Sweepers 2 on Netflix.

Space Sweepers released in February 2021, so the production studios and Netflix executives will most likely track streaming data for several months. The film doesn't end with an obvious sequel tease but does set up a new mission for the focal team. If numbers are good and all goes smoothly in the time of COVID-19, Space Sweepers 2 will likely be greenlit during the first half of 2021.

Space Sweepers 2 could theoretically release in 2023 on Netflix, at least if it's greenlit during the first part of 2021. The original movie was filmed over five months in 2019, so a similar production schedule could begin later in the year for a sequel, or during the early months of 2022. It really depends on the cast members' availability and the creative ambition for Space Sweepers 2. It also relies on how production schedules work out around coronavirus protocols.

The main Space Sweepers cast will presumably return for a sequel, with the exception being Armitage. The original film's storyline mostly revolves around the main protagonists, so the biggest cast addition for Space Sweepers 2 on Netflix would probably be a villain.

Space Sweepers ends with the titular protagonists saving planet Earth. They call on a French friend named Pierre, who transports Dorothy to a safe location, and then defeat the baddie, Sullivan. The space sweepers are indeed threatened by a blast, but their android pal uses her powers to keep them safe. In a final sequence, it's revealed that Bubs wants to become a "sophisticated lady" with a voice to match the persona, and Tae-ho receives clarity about his missing daughter's fate. Meanwhile, Dorothy studies and presumably learns more about her powers while her friends plan a new mission. Space Sweepers 2 on Netflix will likely feature more of the same, with the Victory crew trying to make money while looking after their adopted daughter.
