Tom Holland Compares Uncharted to Indiana Jones & James Bond Having a Baby

Tom Holland compared his character in the upcoming film Uncharted to Indiana Jones and James Bond having a baby. The Uncharted movie is based on the Naughty Dog video game series of the same name. The series follows Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who travels the globe uncovering historical mysteries. Holland plays a younger Drake in the film version, which will serve as a sort of prequel story to the plot of the games.

Uncharted is poised to become a blockbuster video game adaptation in the vein of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. With that in mind, a comparison to other blockbusters makes sense. The James Bond films are a classic franchise dating back to the first film, Dr. No, in 1962. To date, James Bond is the fourth highest-grossing film series after the MCU, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. Meanwhile, Indiana Jones is another successful action-adventure blockbuster franchise with a similarly strong, masculine lead. In fact, Indy, who debuted in 1981, was somewhat inspired by James Bond.

According to Tom Holland, his Uncharted persona Nathan Drake is not just an action hero in the vein of James Bond and Indiana Jones, but a perfect combination of those two classic characters. Speaking on Vanity Fair’s "Little Gold Men" podcast (via MovieWeb), the Marvel actor said, "I think the easiest way to describe the film without belittling it in any way is like if Indiana Jones and James Bond had had a baby, it would be Nathan Drake. That is the way I keep describing the film."

Little is known about the plot of Uncharted, but from what Holland has revealed and what we know of the video game series, comparisons to James Bond and Indiana Jones seem apt. The Indiana Jones reference feels particularly true, as Nathan’s treasure hunting isn’t far off from Indy’s archaeological interests. Holland's not the only one to make this comparison, either. Both director Shawn Levy and co-star Mark Wahlberg have brought up Indy in relation to Uncharted. However, as Drake’s mentor Sully (Wahlberg) is a former US Navy officer, his fighting skills may indeed resemble Bond’s, who is a member of the British Secret Service.

That being said, there are notable differences between these blockbuster heroes and Holland’s Uncharted. As he himself noted, he’s younger than even Nathan Drake was in the video game, let alone Harrison Ford was when he began playing Indiana Jones or any of the actors who have played James Bond. The video game origin is a wildcard and promises something potentially more fresh and modern than those franchises. Though there have been James Bond and Indiana Jones movies in the 2000s, they still retain the classic sensibility of their 20th-century origins. Citing these two beloved heroes as inspiration is a tall order for Holland, so hopefully, Uncharted lives up to those expectations.
