Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Or Las Venturas - What GTA 6 City Is Best?

A large majority of rumors about Grand Theft Auto 6's setting seem to assume the game will be set in Vice City, but Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' Las Venturas seems to offer an equally-compelling location for the next GTA game. While both cities have their pros and cons, there definitely is a reason more fans want GTA 6 to take place in Vice City than Las Venturas, but what is it?

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas offered players three different cities - Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas - along with the countryside of Red County and a desert area housing secret government bases and out-of-the-way airfields. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City offered players only one - the titular city itself, and a large amount of water for things like boat races and boat and/or helicopter-focused missions. Despite this, any cursory glance at the GTA 6 rumor mill will leave viewers with an overwhelming familiarity with Vice City-related content, even though no official setting for the game has yet been announced.

Las Venturas would offer Grand Theft Auto 6 players a unique challenge - is a perfectly flat landscape fun to drive around in? This is something which hasn't really come up since the series' switch to 3D, as even the earliest three-dimensional Grand Theft Auto title, Grand Theft Auto III, featured areas like Shoreside Vale which were incredibly vertical in nature. Las Venturas, on the other hand (being based on the real life Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States) would offer a much flatter terrain than GTA players are used to. Despite that, it could still be a very interesting place to explore with current-gen technology.

Las Venturas as the main location for Grand Theft Auto 6 could let players really expand on the heist mechanics found in GTA Online and Grand Theft Auto 5's base game. GTA: San Andreas has a fantastic casino heist players had to spend an entire string of missions preparing for, and a current-gen version of that combined with the heist functionality Rockstar has already created for GTA Online would be an incredibly enjoyable experience. The desert surrounding the city could be filled with wildlife like what is found in Red Dead Redemption 2's New Austin state, and it would allow for side missions like off-road drag races, game mechanics like burying bodies, and probably lots more Breaking Bad references.

Grand Theft Auto 6 set in Las Venturas would be heavily-focused on gambling, and the developers would have to find a way to balance the features found in both the GTA Online Diamond Casino and Resort and Red Dead Redemption 2 to create fun, engaging gambling minigames for players. It would also likely be strongly focused on different GTA mafia groups, and if the rumors about a 1960s or 1970s time period for GTA 6 are true, players could see the return of famous Grand Theft Auto families like the Leones or the Forellis.

The biggest problem with setting Grand Theft Auto 6 in Las Venturas is that it will be repeating lots of features and environments seen in Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online - casinos, heists, and deserts are all things players are familiar with. GTA 5 fans have been able to explore the deserts of San Andreas for over seven years now, and the most drastic departure from that kind of environment is undoubtedly Vice City, which (in its original incarnation) is a series of islands surrounded by water with no sandy deserts in sight.

There are beaches, though, which means a GTA 6 set in Vice City could bring back the barely-used DDR-style dancing minigames from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for beach parties. Taking players back to Vice City also allows for a continuation (or a prequel) to Tommy Vercetti's story, something many longtime fans would surely be happy to see. Vercetti has barely been mentioned since his takeover of the Vice City drug trade, and it is likely many players are itching to know what happened to his empire.

Vice City as a GTA 6 setting simply offers more variety than Las Venturas does. While the real Florida doesn't allow the kind of casinos seen in Las Venturas, there's nothing stopping Rockstar from changing the laws in Vice City to make this problem non-existent, and that is really the only thing Las Venturas has to make it unique. Players are likely sick of empty deserts in GTA games, and although a bunch of empty areas covered in water wouldn't be much better, the developers have proven they know how to create interesting emergent gameplay mechanics to keep normally-boring landscapes interesting. Since most of the best parts of Las Venturas already exist in GTA Online and Grand Theft Auto 5, Vice City for Grand Theft Auto 6's location just makes more sense.
