How WandaVision Changes The Mind Stone's Infinity War Destruction

WandaVision finally explained a mystery from Avengers: Infinity War - just how was Wanda able to destroy the Mind Stone in the first place? According to Marvel Studios, Scarlet Witch should be considered their most powerful hero. The true power of the Scarlet Witch was demonstrated in Avengers: Infinity War, when she was actually able to destroy the Mind Stone. Granted, this strategy unfortunately proved ineffective against Thanos, who simply used the Time Stone to reverse Wanda's actions.

According to Vision, Wanda was able to destroy the Mind Stone because her powers operate on a "very similar... signature" to the Infinity Stone. There has always been a mysterious connection between Wanda's powers and the Mind Stone; she was introduced as a "miracle," one of only two Hydra test subjects to survive exposure to the Mind Stone. But the precise nature of Wanda's continuing connection to the Infinity Stone remained a mystery, even to herself.

The WandaVision finale has finally resolved that mystery. Agatha Harkness claimed the Mind Stone had simply amplified Wanda's natural magical abilities, but in the finale Wanda revealed the older sorceress was wrong. According to Wanda, the version of the Vision she created in Westview was "the piece of the Mind Stone that lives in me." In other words, the Mind Stone did not simply amplify Wanda's power; rather, it actually bonded with her, placing a portion of its own power within her. This explains why Scarlet Witch's signature color is red, but the flare of energy associated with both the creation and destruction of Westview's Vision was yellow – the color associated with the Mind Stone.

It is certainly pleasing to finally have an explanation as to why Wanda Maximoff was able to destroy the Mind Stone. Her powers possess a similar signature to the Infinity Stone because her own Chaos Magic has been bound to it in some way. This bond is so intimate that Wanda describes it as though a part of the Mind Stone actually lives within her. It is, furthermore, fascinating to note this part of the Mind Stone was used to create Westview's Vision, a character whose heroism was notable throughout WandaVision; when he broke through the Hex, his sole concern was for the citizens of Westview who were suffering, even as he himself was dying. This raises the possibility the Mind Stone is an altruistic force or entity, and that the things Wanda loved the most about Vision actually originated from his own bond with the Mind Stone.

Thanos believed he destroyed the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame, but the film's directors have insisted that was not the case. The Infinity Stones dictate the flow of time in the universe, meaning they can never be truly destroyed; rather, they can only be reduced to subatomic components. That means, technically, the Mind Stone is still present in the MCU, and it will be fascinating to see whether Wanda Maximoff remains bound to it and if it will return in some form.
