OnePlus has essentially confirmed that the long-awaited OnePlus Watch is coming soon while also inviting community members to engage in a contest. The possibility of a OnePlus smartwatch has been in limbo for a very long time, with Carl Pei tweeting design sketches back in 2016. Despite the interest and speculation over the years, the OnePlus Watch seemed to have been relegated to the back burner, until recently.
Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, took to Twitter back in December of 2020 to announce that the OnePlus Watch would arrive early in 2021. While an official release date wasn’t announced at the time, OnePlus did make a concrete foray into the wearables market with the introduction of the OnePlus Band in January. More recently, OnePlus announced it was partnering with Hasselblad, launching an effort over the next three years to improve and develop its smartphone cameras.
In a forum post, OnePlus dropped some heavy hints, including references to watches with the announcement stating “the clock is ticking down” until the launch of the latest flagship, and it also described the upcoming product as “punctual.” A header at the top of the post also featured speculation about the OnePlus Watch in a variety of languages. Although it’s pretty clear what this post is teasing, OnePlus asked its community members to guess what the product is going to be -- with wrong answers only -- but only up until March 23. Speaking of which, the header image also made it clear that the unnamed product will "most likely" launch alongside the OnePlus 9. Considering the company already confirmed the new phone will launch on March 23, that's probably when consumers can expect the OnePlus Watch to arrive as well.
While concrete details on the OnePlus Watch have been scarce until now, prospective buyers do have some potential information on hand. For one thing, unless OnePlus opts for a custom operating system and experience, it’s likely that a OnePlus Watch will be fueled by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor, arrive running on Wear OS, and sporting a circular display. Furthermore, since OnePlus already introduced a fitness band this year, it’s likely that the OnePlus Watch will feature similar technology, especially if it intends to keep up with the Apple Watch. There has also been suggestions that two different designs of the watch will be available to buy, although it remains to be seen if they will launch at the same time.
While none of this has been confirmed yet, it is likely that OnePlus will continue to reveal some additional information in the build up to the launch event and especially considering this is a completely new product. It’s exciting to see that a OnePlus Watch is finally closer to being released. Not to mention, at a time when the company is set to introduce an exciting contender into the smartphone market, the OnePlus 9 Pro. All of which points to an interesting year for OnePlus and its community base.
