Matt James revealed he and Rachael Kirkconnell from The Bachelor are giving their relationship another try. The couple announced their breakup during the After The Final Rose special following a few racially insensitive photos of Rachael. She promised she would put in the work and educate herself on racism in the United States to not only better herself, but to prove to Matt that she is not the person she was in those pictures.
Matt and Rachael fell in love after meeting during his season of the ABC reality series. She quickly became a front-runner, as Rachael was the only person Matt said "I love you" to. By the time it came down to the final two, Matt knew Rachael was the one he wanted to be with, but wasn't quite ready for the commitment of an engagement. At the final rose ceremony, instead of getting down on one knee, Matt asked Rachael to continue a relationship outside of the show. She agreed, and the couple was committed to each other...until her past caught up to her.
During an exclusive interview with People, Matt confirmed he is pursuing a relationship with Rachael. "I've seen Rachael a handful of times," he confirmed to the publication while discussing his partnership with Dick's Sporting Goods for May's National Runners' Month. "I'm not pursuing any relationships right now outside of that. I said I was going to focus on my relationship with her, and that means focusing on it." When asked if the 24-year-old was putting in the work regarding educating herself about racism, he replied, "That's something you could talk to her about." Right now, Matt is focusing on the work he has been doing in his community and his marathon training.
Even though the discussions regarding race were difficult, he was happy to have those meaningful conversations with the public. "Just being at the center of meaningful conversations, that's what I'm looking to do," he said, adding, "I really enjoyed the conversations I had over the past few months ... That's where I see my future and where I'm pursuing opportunities." Matt wants to use his platform to educate those who are ill-informed on the racial injustice in the United States. Besides using his platform for good, the former reality star plans on staying out of the Bachelor Nation world. When asked if he and his BFF, Tyer Cameron, will be making an appearance on Bachelor in Paradise this summer, he replied, "There's a negative chance I'll be on Paradise. There is a negative chance Tyler's on there as well. I think we're good on that."
No one saw Rachael and Matt getting back together anytime soon after their appearance on the After The Final Rose special. After they broke up, Matt seemed to realize his feelings for Rachael and felt he gave up on the relationship too quickly. Hopefully, this time around, the relationship will stick.
