While not every film in this genre becomes a classic (sorry, Cats) there are many musicals with legacies that continue to live on in the hearts of viewers. Because of this, we thought it was time to look at the best musicals of all time. To do this, we'll be using the fan rating on IMDb.

The entertainment website has assigned every American movie musical a star rating on a scale of 1 to 10, based on the votes of registered members. The films with the highest scores (and over 25,000 ratings) will be appearing on this list. Here are the greatest musicals of all time, according to the fans at IMDb.

Fans will recognize most if not all of the popular musicals on this list whether they're from the 1930s or from 2020, all of these famous musicals have great reviews and strong fan bases. There are some animated and Disney musicals that make this list, live-action musicals, and even a previously filmed stage production released as a movie giving a different experience and allowing every fan to find a musical they love. 

15 Tangled (2010) (7.7)

This Disney version of the Rapunzel fairy tale adds new music in a delightful, and at times heartbreaking, animated movie musical.

Tangled sees Rapunzel living in the tower with Mother Gothel and longs to leave her tiny world to see what's out there. She meets an outlaw, Flynn Rider, and the two agree to travel together so she can see the neighboring kingdom. There's lovely music and friendships formed throughout the movie alongside hilarious moments.

14 My Fair Lady (1964) (7.8)

My Fair Lady is a movie version starring Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle and based on the iconic and beloved 1950s stage musical.

The movie follows the same story as the original musical, as a phonetics professor decides to take on the challenge of teaching Eliza, who has a Cockney accent, to enunciate and act like a member of high society. The two clash, but eventually form a bond throughout the film that's filled with lavish costumes, stage production, and music.

13 Mary Poppins (1964) (7.8)

Mary Poppins is a Disney mostly-live-action musical that stars Julie Andrews as the titular magical nanny, Mary Poppins.

Mary Poppins becomes the new nanny to two young children who have a harsh family and are happy to have a new nanny they can have fantastical adventures with. The iconic movie is filled with great, uplifting original music and fun dance choreography throughout.

12 All That Jazz (1979) (7.9)

All That Jazz is a movie musical loosely based on writer and director Bob Fosse's life. The musical centers on a director and choreographer who has to decide if he needs to make changes in his life.

Joe Gideon lives an over-the-top lifestyle filled with drugs, sex, and is always overworking himself to a point where he wonders if he has to make some big changes in his life before it could eventually kill him. Gideon is working on a new Hollywood movie musical and planning to open a new stage musical throughout the movie as well.

11 The Blues Brothers (1980) (7.9)

This '80s comedy, based on The Blues Brothers recurring musical sketch featured on Saturday Night Live, tells of a convict and his brother who attempt to keep the Catholic orphanage they once lived in from closing its doors. They decide to accomplish this by getting their R&B band back together in an attempt to earn money.

The film was both a critical and box office success, with many finding the humor and songs to be well-blended. Though not as strong as the original, the film's sequel arrived in 1998.

10 Fiddler On The Roof (1971) (8.0)

In 1971, the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof was brought to the silver screen. The movie tells of a Jewish father who attempts to find husbands for his five daughters with strong wills and desires of their own.

This Disney fantasy tells of a street rat orphan who ends up discovering a magic lamp that might make all of his dreams (well, three of them) come true. Though he hopes to use his few wishes to enchant Princess Jasmine, he is threatened by the evil sorcerer Jafar as well as his own secrets.

5 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) (8.0)

This musical is a bit different from the rest on this list as it is a filmed stage production instead of a movie musical, but it's just as engaging and popular and one of the highest-rated musicals according to IMDb.

1 The Lion King (1994) (8.5)

This film, featuring music created by Elton John and Hans Zimmer, tells of a lion cub named Simba who leaves him home after believing he has caused his father's death. However, after Simba's evil uncle Scar attempts to take ownership of The Pride Lands, Simba is forced to reclaim his rightful place as ruler.

The stunning visuals, memorable soundtrack, and compelling story have made The Lion King one of animation's greatest. It went home with Best Original Score and Best Original Song for "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" at the Academy Awards.
