Devilman Crybaby's Rappers Explained (& Their Fates)

Here's Devilman Crybaby's rapper group explained - and their fates. Devilman started life as a manga series in the 1970s created by Go Nagai. This followed a schoolboy named Akira, who is told by his best friend Ryo that demons exist and he knows a way to fight back against them. This involves Akira merging with a powerful demon dubbed "Amon," and he thus becomes a dark superhero named Devilman. Despite being aimed at a teen audience, Devilman dealt with some dark themes and featured disturbing sequences, with the story ultimately being an anti-war parable.

Devilman has endured in popularity over the last 50 years due in part to featuring great characters and monsters, in addition to its story. It's also received many adaptations, with the first being an anime series that debuted in 1972. An OVA trilogy was produced between 1987 to 2000 - consisting of The Birth, The Demon Bird and Apocalypse of Devilman - and a live-action movie arrived in 2004. The latter film is considered one of the worst anime to movie adaptations ever produced; during the 1990s, director Brian Yuza (Society) also tried to develop an English language movie that didn't get made.

The most recent take was 2018's Devilman Crybaby, a ten-part Netflix anime. Crybaby was a faithful take on the source material that added new themes and characters of its own, doubling down on the message that humanity could be just as vicious and cruel as the demons. The Netflix series also pumped up the violence and adult elements of Go Nagai's original work, and Devilman Crybaby received a mostly positive critical response. Some new additions to the story are Wamu's gang, a group of five freestyle rappers who end up playing a major supporting part.

Devilman Crybaby's freestyle rapper group consists of leader Wamu, Gabi, Hie, Kukun and Babo. Their raps throughout Crybaby provide another layer of social commentary, but they gradually play a bigger role as the plot unfolds and humanity becomes paranoid about the demon threat. Wamu initially appears to be something of a bully but he's later shown to be a good guy and he has a crush on Akira's best friend Miki. He's a major part of the show's most harrowing sequence, where he sacrifices himself to defend Miki from a crazed human mob, but the two are later seen dismembered by the group with their heads paraded around on pikes.

Netflix's Devilman Crybaby also features Gabi, who appears to be Wamu's best friend and like his pal, he initially seems to be an angry bully, but when the world starts going to hell, he's on the right side of the fight. Both Wamu and Gabi are betrayed by other members of their group, and he dies alongside the former trying to protect Miki. His death comes at the hand of Babo, who when he learns that Akira is a demon, helps lead the attack on Miki's house. He stabs Gabi, but while he registers some remorse in the moment, he's ultimately shown to be only interested in saving himself.

One of the most distinct of the anime show's rapper gang is Hie, the beatboxer who never speaks and whose eyes are covered by dreadlocks. He also turns on Gabi and Wamu, but this is because he suspects Miko - a teenage friend of Maki who also turns into a demon - killed their missing friend Kukun. Hie is seen parading around body parts after the house attack, and Devilman kills the mob in fury. The last member of Devilman Crybaby's rap group is Kukun, probably the most sensitive of the bunch who woos Miko after a heartfelt rap. He's killed offscreen after he and Miko attend a Sabbath party. It's worth noting that four of the group are played by real-life rap stars; Wamu is voiced by hip hop artist Ken the 390, Kukun by Young Dais, Hie by beatboxer Afra and Babo by rapper Hannya.
