Dying Light 2's Nightrunner Difficulty Mode Revealed By Developer

According to its developer, Dying Light 2 Stay Human will have a hard difficulty mode titled Nightrunner, which will challenge the player in new ways and provide veterans of the franchise with a way to test their skills. Though not much about the mode has been confirmed, when asked about a variety of difficulties, the lead game designer explained that Dying Light 2 will have two modes, one which is accessible to all players regardless of skill, and another that will provide a severe challenge. It’s unclear how players will access the different modes; whether they will need to lock in their decision at the start of the game, or if they'll be free to switch during gameplay.

Details surrounding Dying Light 2 are just starting to surface as the game moves closer to release. For most gamers, that December 7 launch date can’t come soon enough. Fans got a trailer for Dying Light 2 Stay Human (as it is now known) at the end of May, with 8 minutes of parkour gameplay and details surrounding the zombie-infested world and its inhabitants. The game will feature plenty of additional mechanics not present in the first game, as well as a brand new challenge for those seeking adventure in the post-apocalyptic world of Dying Light.

First reported by SegmentNext, an interview with Tymon Smektala by AussieGG revealed that Dying Light 2 will have a variety of difficulty settings, albeit only two. According to the lead game designer, there will be a starting difficulty that is accessible for all players, which he believes will give players of all skill capacities the ability to access much of what the game has to offer. However, for those who like a challenge, the Nightrunner difficulty is the best bet.

The Nightrunner difficulty setting will remove aspects of the HUD and make it harder for players to heal themselves, offering a unique challenge for veterans of Dying Light. The sequel’s difficulty selection is limited, though it seems both will offer a variety of gameplay and challenge levels. The Twitch interview also expanded on Dying Light 2’s immersion, which Smektala says will be heavily spotlighted in the Nightrunner mode.

Though it isn’t quite a survival mode, which in many games gives players only a single life and no save options, the Nightrunner mode will indeed be hard, according to the lead designer. It was designed for players who have finished the original game, and are now moving on to Dying Light 2 with a lot of experience. Players will have to wait until December to find out if the mode is as nightmarish as it seems.
