The Masked Dancer: What We Know About Season 2 Of The Show

After a successful first season, the fans are curious to know the status of The Masked Dancer season 2 on Fox. Just last week, The Masked Singer season 5 aired its finale episode, unmasking the Piglet, Black Swan, and Chameleon. Overall, the Piglet won the competition and was unmasked as former boy bander Nick Lachey. Black Swan and Chameleon were unmasked as well, revealing R&B singer Jojo and rapper Wiz Khalifia, respectively.

Before The Masked Dancer season 5 started out, The Masked Dancer season 1 premiered and received rave reviews. In the end, Cotton Candy, Sloth, and Tulip were the finale three of the season and were unmasked during the last episode. Tulip was the first to be eliminated and was unmasked as dancer Mackenzie Ziegler. Sloth followed, and was revealed to be Dancing With The Stars pro dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Overall, Cotton Candy won the coveted diamond mask trophy and was unmasked as Olympic Gold medalist Gabby Douglas.

Even though the first season of The Masked Dancer spin-off was a success, there has been no word from the network regarding a second season as of yet. Nonetheless, Deadline spoke with showrunner James Breen in December 2020 about the reality series and how he believes it has the potential to go on for several seasons. "We all hope it does [run for multiple seasons], [...] but obviously, we want to keep going forever and I think there’s potential, it’s a really fun show, so I hope it goes for as long as it can," he added. Last month, however, Deadline also reported that the series has yet to be renewed for a second season. Fox's alternative chief, Rob Wade, is currently figuring out where and when it might fit on the network. Overall, Wade and his team are "really happy" with the season and believe "it was a great show."

With that said, the network is still figuring out how The Masked Dancer will fit into their "Masked strategy." They are "looking to see where and when that would play best" and will then decide on whether or not it proceeds into a second season. The first season was filmed in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the network learned quite a few lessons about how to navigate filming a new series while following new safety protocol. Wade has several "really nice ideas" about whether the network follows through with a season 2. The Masked Dancer would help fill a void in the Fox schedule as the network decided not to continue with another season of So You Think You Can Dance. If the series does not return, Fox will be the only major network without a reality dance competition series.

With The Masked Dancer season 2 still up in the air, the fans are eager to find out if the series will be returning later in 2021. Even though the viewership was significantly lower than The Masked Singer, the new series has the potential to grow into something just as popular as the original series. If Fox gives the series a second chance, the fans will be the first to celebrate the return of The Masked Dancer.
