Green Knight Video Tells You Everything You Need to Know About Movie

A24 has revealed an oral history video for its upcoming movie The Green Knight. The adaptation is being written and directed by Sundance Film Festival and SXSW favorite David Lowery. The Green Knight features an all-star cast led by Dev Patel alongside Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Barry Keoghan, Kate Dickie, Erin Kellyman, and Ralph Ineson. Lowery has been working on the film with the indie powerhouse studio since 2018.

The story is based on the Arthurian legend that centers on Patel's Sir Gawain, the headstrong nephew of King Arthur, as he goes on a quest to battle the titular gigantic tree-like creature. Though it filmed in 2019, The Green Knight suffered as many did last year from a release delay due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including cancelling its world premiere at the 2020 SXSW. As theaters are finally welcoming audiences back, A24 is building the hype for the film's July release.

With just over a month to go until the adaptation's arrival in theaters, A24 has debuted an oral history for the medieval fantasy poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Narrated by Ineson, who portrays the titular knight, the video offers viewers insight into the source material to prepare for the long-awaited film. Check out the video below:

The world of Arthurian legend is one that frequently misses the mark when adapted for the screen, but Lowery's consistently-lauded work across various genres, from Disney's live-action Pete's Dragon remake to the biographical crime drama The Old Man & the Gun, has generated a lot of excitement for the film. With so many poems being dense in their dialogue and storytelling from the era, adaptations often simplify the material or deviate from it in an effort to keep audiences invested in the movie. Early promotional material has pointed towards Lowery taking a more direct and faithful approach to the source poem than past adaptations, which could be a good sign.

This makes A24's efforts to bolster audience interest with The Green Knight oral history video a smart move by the company. It offers viewers a chance to get a deeper grasp on the source poem as well as some of its interesting history, including nearly being destroyed in a fire. The video also builds anticipation for the rich direction Lowery brings to the film, as well as Ineson's performance as its villain. The wait is finally almost over for The Green Knight, as it releases on July 30.
