How Rise Of The Beasts Can Connect To Past Transformers Movies

Transformers 7, officially subtitled Rise of the Beasts, won’t tie directly into the stories of the previous films, but it can still connect to them in some interesting ways. As the name implies, the new film will pull heavily from the 1990s Beast Wars: Transformers cartoon, which saw the Cybertronians turning into giant mechanical animals instead of human vehicles. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on June 24, 2022.

Paramount has announced that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take place in 1994, about midway between the events of Bumblebee (1986) and Michael Bay’s five-film Transformers series. Because Rise of the Beasts is set apart from the prior films, it has a great opportunity to tell a fresh and self-contained story – something that worked wonders for Bumblebee after the franchise had taken a major downturn. However, the midpoint setting also means that the movie will have opportunities to tie back into all of its predecessors, as well as Beast Wars and the G1 cartoon.

For starters, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts looks like it’s pulling heavily from the G1-inspired look and tone of Bumblebee, which could mean some more high-budget flashbacks to the war for Cybertron glimpsed in that film's opening sequence. It also means that the human characters from Bumblebee could reprise their roles in one way or another. Bumblebee earned more good will than any of the Michael Bay films, so it would make sense for Paramount to lean into its story and aesthetic as much as possible.

As for the Michael Bay movies, those connections might be a bit trickier. The first Transformers movie made a big deal out of the Cybertronians being a secret to most humans, which means human cameos from the Bay films are unlikely. Plus, because of the negative opinion many fans have for Bay's Transformers movies, bringing back characters from them wouldn’t make a lot of sense. It’s more likely that Rise of the Beasts will play into larger plot points from the previous movies, like the Decepticons searching for Megatron or the All-Spark being lost.

There’s also a big opportunity for tie-ins via Beast Wars’ time travel storyline. In the original cartoon, the transformers in Beast Wars are descendants of the Autobots and Decepticons, who fall through a time portal into prehistoric Earth. That storyline may be getting mirrored in the movie, only with the new characters arriving in the 1990s instead. If the Maximals and Predacons come from the future, they might know of the events of the previous Transformers films, and could thereby tie them into the plot of Rise of the Beasts. At the end of the day though, Transformers 7 might be best off ignoring most of the previous films and creating a new identity for itself, free of Michael Bay’s less-than-stellar reputation.
