Minecraft is a game with no definitive end. Fans can explore a near-endless procedurally generated world, craft houses, towns, sculptures, or anything that comes to mind, and do whatever they wish. Of course, there is an end goal players can reach for if they desire, and that’s defeating the formidable Ender Dragon in the End. While shooting it down with arrows and slashing it with enchanted swords is the traditional way to defeat it, one of the most powerful weapons to use against it is also the most unorthodox: a bed.
Beds are normally used to skip over Minecraft’s treacherous nights and establish a new respawn point, but in the End they can be used as an explosive. Because the game forbids the player from establishing a respawn point in the End, attempting to use a bed there will cause it to burst into an explosion of flames. Humorously, this explosion is a fantastic weapon to utilize against the Ender Dragon and is far easier to obtain than TNT. This guide will help players prepare for and defeat Minecraft’s final boss using beds as their weapon of choice.
Gear Up
- It should go without saying, but players should enter the mysterious End dimension fully prepared for the dangers that await them there. Bring armor to defend from attacks, enough food to replenish hunger and heal damage, and most importantly, beds. Players ought to bring a large quantity of wood and as much wool as they can shear with them, as it won’t take a single bed to do the job. Because beds cannot be stacked in an inventory slot, they take up a lot of space, whereas wood and wool can be stacked up to 64 times. With this in mind, it’s advisable to craft the beds while in the End as opposed to bringing them already crafted, as players will have access to more beds to slay the Ender Dragon with if they carry the raw materials with them.
Destroy the End Crystals
- Atop the pillars in the End, are crystals that regenerate the Ender Dragon’s health when it flies near them. While it is possible to defeat the dragon before it has a chance to regain health, getting rid of the crystals beforehand will ensure the damage dealt to it won’t be undone. Fire arrows at them to destroy them, or climb up to the top of the pillars if the crystal is protected by a gate. Be wary that the crystals explode when they’re broken, damaging and knocking the player off to their death, so place a block in front of it to mitigate the damage. Use a bucket of water to descend back to the ground, and rinse and repeat until all the crystals are gone. Again, while it’s not necessary to complete this step, doing so will make the fight considerably easier.
Stake-Out by the Bedrock Structure
- The exit portal that opens up when the Ender Dragon is defeated is a monument made of indestructible bedrock. It’s common to hide here and use it as a ‘base of operations for more than just its defensive capabilities. The elevation of the nearby ground aligns at the perfect angle to set off the bed explosions, so place down a bed on that surface, along with a protection block to wall off the explosion from the player, and wait for the boss to swoop down! Though bedrock cannot be mined, feel free to dig underneath the structure in the event that extra cover is needed. Crafting tables and other useful appliances can be placed down there, safely away from the explosions, to craft more beds.
Time the Explosions Correctly
- Lastly, players will need to set off the bed’s explosion so the Ender Dragon gets caught in the blast. To set off the bed bomb, right-click it like one would if they were trying to sleep in it. However, while exploding the bed when the Ender Dragon comes by will hurt it, there’s a method to deal even more damage. The dragon’s weak point is its head, so wait for the head to enter the bed's proximity before setting it off. Alternatively, making a few platforms of varying elevations nearby will give the player more opportunities to line up their explosions just right.
