James Gunn Offers Update On Peacemaker Show With Set Photos

Writer/director James Gunn offers an update on the production of his Suicide Squad spin-off show, Peacemaker, with a series of new set photos. Created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette, the DC Comics character is infamous for being a pacifist so committed to "peace" he is willing to use force as a superhero with an array of special non-lethal weapons. The eight-episode HBO Max series is being written and created by Gunn, set to helm several episodes.

The show will see John Cena reprising his titular role from the highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe standalone sequel The Suicide Squad and will explore the character's origins. Cena will also star alongside Steve Agee (reprising his role from Gunn's film), Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, and Lochlyn Munro. Development on the series began shortly after Gunn completed production on Suicide Squad just for fun until DC Films actually took an interest in it and quickly got to work bringing it to life before he returned to the world of Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

A month after offering a tiny tease of Cena's hero from the set, Gunn has revealed a new set of photos from production on Peacemaker. Included is a look at Peacemaker's porch frog (which Gunn said he despises),  some behind-the-scenes shots, and a confirmation from Gunn that the crew is racing to finish the final days of shooting in time. Check out the BTS stills below:

The quick turnaround time Gunn has exhibited for both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker is quite a miraculous feat, especially in a time in which many big-scale productions are struggling to get off the ground. While Gunn has been teasing that Vol. 3 will likely be his final outing for the Guardians franchise, it seems clear he's eager to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to bring his beloved franchise to a close. That being said, Peacemaker does mark Gunn's first major venture into television in his career, which could signal the extended production nature of small-screen work has become a little strenuous for the filmmaker.

Whichever the explanation is, the news that Peacemaker is finally wrapping production should come as a point of excitement for audiences as much as the impending release of The Suicide Squad. With DC FanDome returning later this year, chances are high new looks at the HBO Max series will be debuted at the virtual event, if not sooner. For now, audiences can look forward to Gunn's first outing in the DCEU when The Suicide Squad hits theaters and the WarnerMedia streaming platform in August.
