Joan Allen Interview: Lisey's Story | Screen Rant

Lisey's Story brings Stephen King to Apple TV+ on June 4. The limited series is based on King's most personal novel and was adapted for the screen by the author himself. Over the course of  8 episodes, he delves into the aftermath novelist Scott Landon's death, and how his wife Lisey comes to understand the world of imagination and horror he left behind.

Lisey Landon (Julianne Moore, Dear Evan Hansen) doesn't just have her grief to contend with, however. She must also care for her sister Amanda (Joan Allen, Room), who suffers from catatonic episodes that seem to transport her to another world. Amanda shares a secret with Scott that Lisey must begin to understand as she unravels a deeper truth about her family, her husband, and her marriage.

Allen spoke to Screen Rant about taking on a character as complicated as Amanda as well as understanding her relationship to her sister and Scott Landon himself.

Amanda is such a fascinating character, and you explored all her complexities so well. Can you talk about that complicated dynamic with the sisters? Because there's so much love there, but also a lot of stress and tension between them.

Joan Allen: I think what the series does really well is it depicts family relationships that are complicated, and it's not all roses. They love each other, but there are days when it's not so easy. And I think Stephen King captured that really well, where they love each other to death and then they just want to hit each other over the head sometimes, because it's so real.

And they're also going through [a lot]. Lisey's trying to deal with her own grief and loss, and Amanda has her own issues with fragility and mental health concerns. They have a lot going on together. I think it's very three dimensional.

Another fascinating dynamic is between Amanda and Scott, with the special connection that they have that maybe Lucy doesn't really understand. Can you talk about why they're able to see eye to eye?

Joan Allen: I think what Amanda and Scott have in common - the best that I could piece it together and the way I looked at it - is there are just some people who are more fragile than others. Whether they come out of the gate that way when they're born or not, I think that they both recognize that in each other.

And they're both engaged in activities to try to soothe themselves that were not the healthiest or the best, so they have, they understand what it's like to try to do that. You think you're doing something that you really are trying to cope and soothe yourself, but it's actually pretty destructive for yourself. And I think they understood that. And they had an ability to share a common language surrounding that.

It must be such a privilege to work from Stephen King's words on paper. But did you also get to pick his brain in terms of how to approach your character, or did you focus on the text?

Joan Allen: I looked at the text, and I really mainly drew [from there]. I know our wonderful director Pablo Larraín spoke with Stephen King at length, so I really more than anything used Pablo as the the filter and the mouthpiece. for the vision. Because he had many conversations and dialogue - quite a lot of dialogue with Stephen King.

Do you have a favorite Stephen King work, in any medium?

Joan Allen: That would be The Shining.

Amanda also deals with Boo'ya Moon in the series, as well as being separated from herself in various states. How do you approach that as an actress?

Joan Allen: I just believe that she went to these two different places. I don't know.

I believe that she was really struggling in her real life, and she needed to find some relief somewhere. And so, it's just really a matter of just: that's what happens. I am taking that leap and believing it, and I'm relying on my wonderful director to help guide me to the right place.
