Kelsey Grammer Hopeful Original Frasier Cast Will Return For Reboot

With the Frasier revival officially a go on Paramount+, Kelsey Grammer is hoping that the rest of the main cast returns for the project. Playing Dr. Frasier Crane, the character was first introduced in the Ted Danson-led and equally successful sitcom, Cheers. When the Boston-set bar-centric series wrapped up, NBC came up with the spin-off that centered on Diane's psychiatrist ex-boyfriend.

The Frasier revival has been in the works for years, with Grammer spearheading efforts to bring back the Cranes on the small screen. But, it was only in early 2021 when it was announced that it's finally happening, with the show releasing new episodes via Paramount+. Since the project was announced, not much has been revealed; plot specifics remain scant at the moment. Most importantly, there's no confirmed casting sheet for the show. Aside from Grammer, no other actor has officially boarded the streaming series.

Now, Grammer offers a small update regarding the Frasier reboot. In a new interview with Collider, the actor reveals that they're in the middle of polishing the show's story, and while there's no confirmed production date, he's expecting that it will be ready by the first quarter of 2022. Additionally, he also expressed his hopes that his former castmates will sign up and join him in the show.

“We think we’re going to get most of the actors back, I’m certainly hopeful that we will, and I’m fairly confident that they’ll come back... We have a story to tell — that can actually be told with or without them, honestly — but I want them back because that’s what I always dreamed of. I thought we should explore all their lives in their third act, and so that is my hope.”

While Frasier was named after one character, it was at its best as an ensemble. John Mahoney's Martin Crane, Jane Leeves' Daphne Moon, David Hyde Pierce's Niles Crane, and Peri Gilpin as Roz Doyle all played significant parts that made the show so much more interesting. Knowing this, it makes sense that Grammer wants his co-stars to also reprise their respective roles. Back in April 2020, before it was officially announced, Gilpin already teased the project; while she didn't reveal whether or not she's directly involved, it's an indication that she is game to return. Unfortunately, the Crane patriarch will not be in the series as Mahoney has passed away in 2018. It will be most interesting to see, however, if Pierce comes back since he previously said that he's opposed to revisiting the role.

Since the story for the Frasier revival is still being polished, chances are they're still waiting to see who else will be confirmed to star in the project. Given the fact that Grammer didn't name drop anyone, it's possible that no one else is officially onboard. That being said, given the optimism in the actor's comments, he's convinced that his fellow stars will eventually sign up. Otherwise, the reboot could ultimately be disappointing if none of them show up.
