Who Plays Young Vin Diesel In Fast & Furious 9 | Screen Rant

Vin Diesel has been a crucial part of The Fast and Furious franchise since 2001 and there are two actors playing the younger versions of his character in F9. Diesel made his debut as Dominic Toretto, the loyal street racer who wore his heart on his sleeve, in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious. In F9, fans are getting more details about Dom’s past and the strained relationship he has with one of his family members. To explore that aspect of the character’s life, F9 went the way of flashbacks.

F9 introduces audiences to Jakob Toretto, Dom’s estranged brother. Naturally, the film takes the time to reveal what happened to him and why they had a falling out all those years ago. The start of the movie is set in 1989. A young Dom and Jakob are both a part of their dad’s racing crew. Following a fatal car crash, Dom blames Jakob for their father’s death, forcing him out of the family after beating him at a car race. Later on in F9, Dom’s memories reveal his 10-year-old self learning about the longevity of cars from his dad. In these scenes, Dom is played by another actor entirely. The actor to primarily play young Dom in the film is Vinnie Bennett. The second, even younger, version of the street racer is portrayed by Diesel’s real-life son, Vincent Sinclair Diesel.

Bennett is a New Zealand actor who got his first big break starring in the film Fantail and the New Zealand dramedy TV series Filthy Rich before branching out into other roles. He had guest starring roles in the comedy show Good Grief, The Bad Seed, The Shannara Chronicles, and Breckman Rodeo. He also appeared in Ghost in the Shell alongside Scarlett Johansson; he played a rookie cop . F9 marks Bennett’s first major international film where he has more of a prominent role. When he found out he was playing Dom, a character with so much history in the franchise, the actor says he was a bit speechless, but very excited about the opportunity.

Meanwhile, F9 is officially Sinclair Diesel’s very first role and playing his father’s character onscreen certainly makes for a memorable first gig. The ten-year-old’s role in the film was first announced in March 2021 and Diesel says casting his son to play a younger Dom was all director Justin Lin’s idea. It was perfect casting, too, since the pair were already related and it was likely more believable to buy into the idea that Sinclair Diesel was actually a younger Dom, even though he only appeared briefly. It’s unclear, however, whether the young actor will go on to have a career in Hollywood or if being in F9 was a one-time thing.

This isn’t the first time that a young Dom has appeared in flashbacks in the franchise. In Furious 7, a younger version of the street racer was portrayed by Alex McGee, who has also appeared in 1 and 3, as well as the short films Changing Time and Soulmate (Dot) Wed. Whether or not Fast and Furious 10 revisits Dom’s past or if F9 will be the last fans see of the flashbacks to his life remains to be seen, but there’s definitely potential to do so in the upcoming sequels.
