Hubert Pellegrini’s wife betrayed him in Lupin Part 2, but why? Assane Diop returned in the second part of Lupin to exact his revenge on Pellegrini for framing his father, Babakar, for stealing a necklace. The five-episode Part 2 saw Assane assisted by several people in a bid to finally take down Pellegrini for his crimes, including Anne Pellegrini, whose story comes full circle after she is first introduced in Part 1.
Flashbacks during Lupin Part 1 revealed that Anne had a more friendly relationship with Babakar, who brought Assane the book about Arsène Lupin after picking it up from the Pellegrini’s library. After Babakar is framed for stealing Marie Antoinette’s necklace, Anne discovers what her husband did. She was later convinced by Dumont to have Babakar sign a confession, believing that he would get a reduced sentencing. However, the judge wasn’t at all lenient and Babakar was given a full sentence before dying in prison. It wasn’t long before Anne divorced Pellegrini, but she remained silent publicly about what happened.
One of the reasons Pellegrini had his downfall in Lupin Part 2 was due to Anne’s betrayal; she called Guedira and told him about her husband’s actions. Anne isn’t exactly a confrontational person despite knowing that Pellegrini’s framing of Babakar was wrong. However, she finally decided to tell the truth after Juliette asked her about it (and that was only after Assane asked her to bring it up). Perhaps she felt it was finally time to reveal the truth, especially now that Assane had done the groundwork to knock Pellegrini down a peg or two and Juliette no longer believed her father to be a decent person or her personal hero. What’s more, Dumont was in charge of the original investigation and he was already in the pocket of Hubert so he didn’t do anything with the information. Guedira, on the other hand, was trustworthy and she probably felt like there was no longer a looming threat to her or Juliette personally after all these years.
After all, feeding the police information now, with Juliette pushing her to do the right thing, made it easier to finally come clean and assuage all her pent-up guilt regarding what happened. Anne Pellegrini was never much a fan of her husband and, once she saw what he was really doing and the fact that he didn’t care about who he hurt, she retreated and became estranged. However, she lacked the courage to do anything about Pellegrini’s actions beforehand, even after she was confronted by Assane himself in the present day. It really took having Juliette on her side to finally push her to do something. By this point, all the puzzle pieces were in place and, despite Pellegrini getting out of jail after Anne sold him out, his reputation had already taken a hit thanks to her giving Guedira information.
Anne doesn’t really play a bigger role after she outed her ex-husband in Lupin Part 2, but her betrayal ultimately helped along Pellegrini’s final downfall at the hands of Assane. What her relationship with Juliette will look like and whether she will have to formally testify in court after Hubert’s final arrest in Lupin’s Part 2 finale remains unclear, but Anne finally did what she should have done years ago.
