A very cool Mario Kart Hot Wheels track is hitting stores later this week. This colorful playset was announced and originally listed for release back in May, but this was due to an error by Amazon that posted it prematurely.
Mario and his friends have been busy when it comes to merchandise and other licensed endeavors. Just last year, LEGO announced a partnership with Nintendo to produce the LEGO Super Mario electronic board game, with further expansions and starter sets being released not long after it. Meanwhile, the long-awaited Super Nintendo World theme park has finally re-opened in Japan following several COVID-related delays, although the planned US location at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida is still in the works.
NintendoLife reports that the previously announced Hot Wheels Mario Kart Rainbow Road Raceway Set will be available on June 24 at Target and on Amazon.com. The eight-foot-long, fully customizable playset will price at $119.99 and features electronic start and finish gates (featuring Lakitu and his trusty Start Signal), a spinning question block, and a randomizer with pop-up features that capture the look and feel of the Mario Kart games. Also included are two 1:64 scale die-cast karts featuring Mario and King Boo, with other characters being available separately.
Fans will recognize the classic Rainbow Road course from the Mario Kart series, with an updated version of it appearing in every installment since the original Super Mario Kart back in 1992. It is regarded as one of the Mario Kart franchises’ most iconic and difficult tracks due to how easy it is for racers to fall off the edge of the road and lose vital progress, with players constantly trying out new tricks and shortcuts to show off online. Fans have also recreated the floating, multicolored road in games like Animal Crossing, given its relatively simple layout. The Rainbow Road has also made appearances in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo DS, and Paper Mario: Color Splash.
Hot Wheels’ Mario Kart Rainbow Road Raceway Set looks like fun for kids and fans of the classic Nintendo racing series, containing plenty of fun little details from the games and featuring lots of track customization possibilities. As its description implies, this Hot Wheels set is only part of a larger Mario Kart collection, with additional karts modelled after Princess Peach, Luigi, and Yoshi being released alongside it on June 24.
