Smallville Animated Show With Original Cast In Development

Warner Bros. Television's popular superhero series Smallville is getting an animated version according to original star Tom Welling. Smallville earned a dedicated fanbase throughout its ten-season run from 2001-2011 on The WB, which eventually became The CW. Based on the DC Comics' Superman character, writing and producing partners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar developed the concept as a prequel to The Man of Steel. The show centered on Clark Kent (Welling) before he became Superman, coming to terms with his alien origins while navigating provincial life in the fictional town of Smallville, Kansas.

Series fan favorites included Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, Clark's love interest, Erica Durance, who stepped onto the scene as Lois Lane in season four, and Michael Rosenbaum as frenemy Lex Luthor. The latter began the show in a good place with Clark, after he saved his life. Throughout the seasons, viewers got to see how the billionaire became Superman's arch nemesis. After the series ended, the story lived on in comic book form until 2015. To fans' delight, both Welling and Durance reprised their Smallville roles in 2019 for the Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Now, Welling is giving the Smallville fandom even more to buzz about. While making a Cameo video for a fan (shared by tariel22 via blurayangel) Welling teased that he and Rosenbaum are working on an animated Smallville series with the original cast. Welling said:

Michael Rosenbaum and I are actually working on an animated series to bring those characters back to life and use as many of the original cast members as possible. Don't tell anybody, though. It's a secret, we're still working on it.

While Cameos are made as gifts for one person, Welling surely had to know the receiver would share his exciting "secret" project. Besides, the actor has publicly expressed much desire to reprise his role as Superman. While Smallville famously had a "no tights, no flights" rule, Welling has said he'd be game to join the DCEU as Superman opposite his friend Robert Pattinson's Batman, though it's unlikely that will come to fruition. The performer's best chance for his character to wear the iconic suit may be in a potential animated series.

Even so, it's unclear if animated Clark Kent would slip into the red and blue ensemble in a Smallville series. That all depends on the show's concept. While Welling and Rosenbaum could reboot the original series in animated form, it's more likely it would pick up where the show left off or flash forward to chronicle the characters in their present-day lives. Either way, Welling's now public secret is exciting news for those who loved Smallville during its original run.
