More than a few Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players were disappointed in the latest wave of Mii Fighter costumes. The new batch of four costumes de-confirmed several characters fans were expecting to join as full-fledged characters. However, there are still players who are excited to see the characters in any capacity.
Mii Fighters were first introduced to the series in Super Smash Bros. For 3DS and Wii U. Miis can fight in one of three styles: Gunner, Brawler, or Swordfighter. Players also have the option of customizing not only the Mii's moveset, but their attire as well. New costumes have been added to Smash Ultimate with each DLC pack.
The Mii Fighter Costumes #10 pack contains 4 outfits. These transform Miis into Dante from Devil May Cry, Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia, Shantae from Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, and the Dragonborn from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The first three were heavily requested to be included as full DLC fighters. Their subsequent snub has left many fans unsatisfied. Those upset quickly went online to share their frustrations and disappointment. "Dante" quickly started trending on Twitter after the reveal. Even the official Atlus Twitter account got in on the action.
Dante is arguably the costume getting the worse reception. The protagonist of the Devil May Cry games has been a popular pick among Western players to become a Smash fighter. While some are thankful that he is being recognized in some capacity, the above tweets are proof that the costume is not going over well. Shantae's exclusion is also disappointing. However, as her series is much more niche than the others included in the pack, the backlash isn't quite as severe. It helps that she comes with a music track of her own, much like Cuphead and Sans.
Lloyd and the Dragonborn are receiving a more nuanced response. Obviously, there are still some fans who feel let down that their favorites didn't make the cut. However, Lloyd was a Mii Fighter costume in Smash for 3DS and Wii U, making his exclusion a bit less jarring. Skyrim's popularity has also waned some in recent years. Fellow Bethesda rep Vault Boy was previously a costume, as well.
With only one more DLC character left for Smash Ultimate, the roster of viable characters shrinks. Obviously, Sakurai and the rest of the development team can throw a curveball and pick a character nobody expected. Both Sephiroth and Steve were considered longshots, after all. Still, Sakurai seemed aware of the response, commenting on it during the reveal. Hopefully, the presence of the Mii costumes doesn't sour the Smash Bros. experience too much for these players.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
