Arrowverse Easter Egg Sets Up DC's Dark Superman Replacement

Warning: SPOILERS for Superman & Lois season 1, episode 10, "O Mother, Where Art Thou?"

The Arrowverse dropped a major Easter egg in Superman & Lois season 1, relating to a massive DC Comics character in the Superman canon. Superman & Lois has started to bring everything full circle as it pertains to Morgan Edge's plan to transform Earth into a new Krypton. After being revealed as Superman's half-brother Tal-Rho, other mysteries are now clearing up, particularly how Kryptonian consciousnesses are being planted into human bodies. The tenth episode, "O Mother, Where Art Thou?" unveiled the machine's surprising connection to the DC Universe.

"O Mother, Where Art Thou?" revealed that Lara-Lor-Van, Superman's biological mother, had developed this technology. Despite its primary functions, the machine's name was just as important. Superman & Lois established that it was being referred to as the Eradicator, tying it back to the Superman canon. The Arrowverse version of the technology got into Tal's hands when it landed on Earth a couple of years ago. Even though Superman was able to undo what Lara's machine had done, the name Eradicator has a significant meaning in the comics. DC's Eradicator was a sentient Kryptonian android who has been depicted both as a villain and ally to fellow super-strong Kryptonian, Superman.

Part of the Eradicator's existence was to preserve Krypton's history and legacy in the universe. Eradicator's most famous role in the DC canon was during the Reign of the Supermen arc, a sequel to The Death of Superman. After Kal-El's passing, the Eradicator temporarily replaced the Man of Steel, but his methods were more extreme. While Clark's body was put in the Fortress of Solitude's healing matrix, the Eradicator filled in as an anti-hero Superman and has even been an evil Superman. The advanced technology that the Eradicator got made from allowed it to evolve into a humanoid form of itself, hence why he looks similar to Superman. The Arrowverse version of Eradicator on Superman & Lois was, without doubt, significantly different.

Even though they set up the Eradicator as a literal machine, that doesn't mean it couldn't evolve into something like the comic book version later on Superman & Lois. However, what is interesting is how Eradicator is the latest Easter egg/character the Arrowverse has introduced that had a role in the Reign of the Supermen storyline. Since the big reveal that Captain Luthor was actually John Henry Irons, a.k.a. Steel, it is interesting how the Eradicator technology was unveiled so soon. Given how the tenth episode ended with Superman still having the Eradicator, perhaps the Fortress of Solitude will lead to it becoming an android.

In one way or another, it definitely feels safe to say that Superman & Lois is not done entirely with the Eradicator. If this does partially set up Eradicator to have a similar role in the Arrowverse like in the comics, that would certainly be useful. Should the creators of the show ever choose to pursue a storyline similar to Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen in a few season's time, the seeds being planted now are invaluable. In that case, Superman & Lois will already have heavy players like Steel and Eradicator in the Arrowverse.
