Space Jam 2: Why The Goon Squad Are Already Better Than The Monsters

The character posters for Space Jam 2: A New Legacy have been revealed, and just by looking at them, it’s clear to see that the new Goon Squad would wipe the floor with the original Space Jam villains, the Monstars. This new antagonist team boasts a starting five of current star NBA and WNBA players all clearly enhanced with superpowers and new looks. The Monstars team, while giant monster-aliens imbued with the skills of five star NBA players, had no discernible super powers other than being really big and strong.

This new team set to face off with LeBron James, Bugs Bunny, and the rest of the Looney Tunes boasts an impressive lineup of talent. From the NBA there’s LeBron’s real-life Los Angeles Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, the sharpshooting guard from the Golden State Warriors, and dynamic point guard and occasional rapper Damian Lillard from the Portland Trailblazers. The WNBA also gets represented in Space Jam 2 with a couple of former league MVPs in Nneka Ogwumike of the LA Sparks, and Diana Taurasi from the Phoenix Mercury. Together they form the Goon Squad, and while they’ll present a huge challenge to LeBron and company, had they gotten to play Space Jam’s Monstars it would likely end in a blowout victory for this new team.

While much is still unknown about the inner workings of the powers of each Goon Squad member in Space Jam 2, plenty can be inferred from the new posters that display the player's new appearances. Each player has been given a super enhancement to their already significant basketball skills. This new villainous team will sport an All-Star roster upgraded with wings (Davis), extra appendages (Ogwumike), a giant snake tail (Taurasi), a robot body (Lillard), and the ability to morph into water or fire (Thompson). That ner development is what sets them well apart from the Monstars.

When the Monstars stole the abilities of Charles Barkley, Larry Johnson, Muggsy Bogues, Shawn Bradley, and Patrick Ewing, the only thing that got added to those skills was becoming taller and stronger. The power stealing aliens known as the Nerdlucks were originally diminutive in size and stature, but when they became the Monstars, they grew massively in both height and weight. That certainly was a great advantage to have, but it's nothing like the enhancements of the Goon Squad that will be seen in Space Jam 2.

The Monstars of the original Space Jam were undoubtedly an imposing threat on the hardwood, but how would they ever hope to match up with an even more talented roster of players who also have superpowers? Tall and strong is one thing, but spider limbs, and snake tails are an entirely different type of unfair advantage. It doesn't matter how tall you are when someone can literally fly right over the top of you while you’re stuck on the ground. Having tremendous strength is helpful until the player you're guarding can become a flame or a puddle and go right past you. If matched up, the once imposing Monstars would face a Goon Squad team that, because of their powers, would negate every advantage the former Michael Jordan foes would have.

It's unfortunate that these two teams won't get a chance to go head to head, as it has already been confirmed that Space Jam 2: A New Legacy won't feature an appearance from the Monstars. The novelty alone of seeing a team of enhanced players vs. a team of giant aliens would be worth the price of admission, however, the end result would assuredly be the Goon Squad in a rout. If LeBron and his Toon Squad teammates were to see this hypothetical matchup of villains, perhaps they'd think twice about playing the Goon Squad.
