Star Wars: Every Clone Trooper Still Alive During the Original Trilogy

Clone Troopers fulfilled their purpose at the end of the Clone Wars, and though they were quickly replaced by Imperial Stormtroopers, some clones were still alive and active during the Star Wars original trilogy. Clone Troopers fought heroically alongside the Jedi during the Clone Wars. Little did the Jedi know that their clone allies were created specifically to gain their trust and, when the moment came, murder them. The clones themselves would never have done this willingly, however, so brainwashing was used to compel them to betray their leaders.

Cloned from the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett, Clone Troopers were easily among the finest non-Force sensitive warriors in the galaxy, able to support the mystical Jedi against the overwhelming Separatist droid forces. Clone Troopers were trained throughout their life to be the ideal soldiers, but one unfortunate drawback to this was their growth acceleration. Clones aged at twice the rate of ordinary humans, allowing them to be ready for deployment in only a decade, but cutting their lifespan in half. This, unfortunately, meant that most clones were past their prime by the Galactic Civil War, and few remained active combatants by that point. Moreover, the Empire ended clone production shortly after the Clone Wars ended, making Fett clones even more of a rarity by the original trilogy.

Few Clone Troopers are confirmed to be alive during the original trilogy, and a small number of clones who potentially lived during the films. Wolffe, the Clone Commander of the 104th Battalion, was last seen in Star Wars Rebels as an active member of the Rebellion, so Wolffe could have easily been alive during the films. Crest was a clone who lived on as an Imperial Stormtrooper in the 2014 novel Tarkin and may have also continued to serve the Empire during the original trilogy. The role-playing game Imperial Assault includes a clone, Wildfire, as an active member of the Rebellion, and he also potentially lived during the original trilogy, but none of them are known for sure. Here are all the Clone Troopers in canon and Legends who are confirmed to live during the original films.

In the non-canon Star Wars Legends, Able was a standard Clone Trooper who served under Jedi General Shaak Ti before becoming stranded on the jungle world of Lubang Minor early in the Clone Wars. He survuved for years, missing the Sith coup and Order 66. Less than a year after the Battle of Yavin, Able was discovered by Luke Skywalker and Arhul Narra. After being filled in on the Republic’s fall, Able willfully joined the Rebellion, fighting for an ideology he believed in and becoming an elite Rebel operative. Before the events of The Empire Strikes Back, however, Able sacrificed himself to save Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia from a Sith-possessed Celeste Morne. Though he didn’t die, Able was transformed into a Rakghoul, a mindless Sith monstrosity, effectively killing the good man he once was.

Another non-canon Legends clone, the Imperial Stormtrooper Sergeant TK-622 is a brainwashed former Republic Clone Trooper. With a single appearance in an issue of Star Wars: Empire, 622 fought against Rebel forces on Ralltiir, shortly before the Rebellion successfully stole the Death Star plans. While 622 was an unsurprisingly exceptional combatant, his active brainwashing prevented him from efficiently tracking down a Rebel saboteur who assassinated 622’s commanding officer. The Imperial clone eventually did track down the Rebel agent during his service aboard the Death Star, and the two fought as the climactic Battle of Yavin occurred concurrently. The Rebel assassin died, and 622 began to doubt his belief in the Empire as Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star, killing 622.

The venerable former Clone Pilot Klick was brainwashed into Imperial service at the end of the Clone Wars, becoming an elite Imperial Pilot who lived throughout the events of the original trilogy in Star Wars Legends. Klick became an agent of Cronal, a powerful apprentice of Palpatine’s. As shown in the 2008 novel Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor, Klick became one of Cronal’s elite Blackhole Stormtroopers but served Luke Skywalker and the New Republic as part of Cronal’s plot to take over Luke’s body and restore the Empire. Luke defeated Cronal during the Battle of Mindor, unintentionally killing Klick and the rest of the Blackhole Stormtroopers when their meltmassif armor’s failsafe mechanisms were activated.

In Legends, the Alpha-class ARC Trooper Spar (formerly Alpha-Ø2) developed a unique mutation in his youth. The clone gradually began remembering events from Jango Fett’s life in addition to his own. Hoping to avoid a life of Jedi servitude, Spar deserted the Republic and founded the “Mandalorian Protectors,” an elite team of Mandalorian warriors (and former Death Watch members), replacing Jango as Mandalore (Mandalorian leader). As Mandalore, Spar stole the identity of Jango’s son, Boba, and allied the Protectors with the CIS. At the end of the Clone Wars, Spar and his Protectors were betrayed by Darth Sidious, leading the rogue clone to lay low in the Extrictarium Nebula while his ally, Fenn Shysa, succeeded him as Mandalore. Years after Return of the Jedi, Spar, whose sanity eroded from two lifetimes of memories, was killed by Ailyn Vel, who mistook him for her father, Boba.

The fan-favorite Clone Captain is a major character in Star Wars canon after a big role in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and had a reoccurring supporting role in Star Wars Rebels. Thanks to Ahsoka Tano, Rex’s control chip implant was removed during Order 66, restoring his free will and allowing him to avoid Imperial service. As shown in Rebels, Rex was an early member of the Rebel Alliance, putting his extraordinary combat and tactical skills to use against the Empire. The Rebels series finale also reveals that Rex fought in the Battle of Endor as a Rebel Commander, making him an active combatant throughout the original trilogy. Rex has a retroactive cameo in Return of the Jedi as one of Han Solo’s strike team members, strongly implying that the two legendary heroes worked together beforehand.

A Clone Medic in Captain Rex’s company, Kix was one of the few clones in Star Wars canon to discover the Clone Army’s true purpose before Order 66 was executed. Rather than having him assassinated, however, Sidious and Dooku had Kix kidnapped and frozen in stasis to be transported to Serenno. During its voyage, the Separatist transport carrying Kix went down in battle, leaving the clone stranded on Ponemah Terminal. Kix remained in stasis through the original trilogy, eventually being discovered and unfrozen by Sidon Ithano and his pirate crew. Kix may have been the only clone alive during the First Order/Resistance War, and as a member of Ithano’s crew, was sympathetic to the Resistance. Though he didn’t warn the Jedi of the Sith coup, Kix’s kidnapping allowed him to survive the original Star Wars trilogy, and become an ally to the Resistance.
