Warning! Spoilers for The Joker #4 ahead!
The latest issue of The Joker has revealed that the Court of Owls has set its sights on their next target and it’s someone near and dear to the Batman family: Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Oracle. The Court has made a name for itself for controlling some of the deadliest assassins of the DC universe. Now one of those assassins has successfully located an unaware Oracle without her teammates by her side.
Back in The Joker #2, it was revealed that Cressida, the mysterious woman who hired ex-Commissioner Jim Gordon to hunt and kill Joker, is working on behalf of the Court of Owls. Seeing Joker as too much of a threat after his presumed attack on Arkham Asylum, the Court had chosen Gordon as the ideal candidate to put an end to Clown Prince of Crime’s reign of terror once and for all. Though still unaware as to the true nature of his employer, Gordon embarked on his mission. Before he left, however, he tasked his daughter with uncovering more details about Cressida and who she represents.
The Joker #4 by James Tynion IV, Guillem March, Arif Prianto and Tom Napolitano shows just how dangerous Oracle’s investigation has turned out to be. After a day of unsuccessfully attempting to glean details about Cressida by spying on her with the other Batgirls, Oracle sends her teammates home for the night. Alone in the Clock Tower and pondering whether Cressida knows she’s being watched, Oracle fails to notice the looming presence of a Talon right behind her.
It’s clear that Oracle is in a lot of danger, but the real irony is that she’s at the mercy of the villainous organization that her own father is unknowingly working for right now. If Gordon gets wind that the Court has kidnapped or hurt his daughter, it may very well be the catalyst for him to learn exactly who he’s working for. Gordon would likely forfeit his mission to kill Joker after finding out he is working for the Court, but with Oracle’s life on the line, the stage seems set for a very serious conflict between him and his ruthless employer.
Once the Court of Owls has its next victim in its sights, it is not partial to just giving up easily. Unbeknownst to herself, her father and the rest of the entire Batman family, Oracle is trapped in a life-or-death situation at this moment. Readers may find out whether Gordon can learn the truth in time to save his daughter when The Joker #5 releases on July 13, 2021.
