Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl was announced early July 13. A Super Smash Bros.-style fighting game, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will feature characters from well-known shows from the network fighting in an all-out brawl against one another. The initial trailer revealed characters and faces from Spongebob Squarepants, Ren & Stimpy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, among others, with more promised to be unveiled at a later date. Characters from two of Nickelodeon's most popular shows, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, were notably absent, but silhouettes from Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's cover art indicates the elemental masters may be making an appearance sooner than fans think.
Avatar: The Last Airbender ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 - 2008, while The Legend of Korra aired from 2012 - 2014. The former follows Aang, the avatar who had been missing for 100 years. He must learn to master all four elements in order to bring the fire nation to heel and restore balance between the nations. The Legend of Korra is about Aang's successor, Korra, who has to work to bring unity on the physical and spirit realms alike. Both shows were met with critical and fan acclaim, and saw a resurgence in popularity when both Avatar series came to Netflix in 2020.
Given Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are two of Nickelodeon's strongest IPs, transcending generations of fans, it was puzzling that Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's reveal didn't lead with Aang and Korra on the initial roster. As the game isn't set to launch until the fall, it's possible developers are holding that announcement until closer to the release date in order to ramp up hype around the game. However, keen-eyed fans may have seen both avatars on Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's cover art.
So far, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl's box art is composed only of fighter silhouettes, not even showing those already announced in the roster. To the left of the shadowed cover art is an image that looks strikingly familiar to Korra. The silhouette holds a flexed arm out with a clenched fist, leading back to the shadow of a head that seems to mirror Korra's early series hairstyle with three distinct ponytails. Just below the silhouette that resembles Korra is the shadow of an outstretched human hand. With the Avatar universe top of mind, it closely resembles the hand and sleeve of Aang. Aang is frequently seen with his hand outstretched, a pose matching the shadow on the cover art.
In the Avatar universe, each style of bending was modeled after different martial arts. Waterbending follows the smooth motions of Tai Chi, earthbending the rooted movements of Hung Gar, firebending using Northern Shaolin and airbending the light Bagua. As the avatar, Aang and Korra are able to seamlessly shift between all four fighting styles, making them an enticing add to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl if such a thing were to happen.
