Eboni K. Williams is addressing the "preachy" title she has received on The Real Housewives of New York City, saying she proudly wears her title as a "badge of honor." The RHONY newcomer has had a number of teachable moments on the show with the other ladies. The housewives and viewers have been blasting Eboni for doing too much teaching on the show.
With Eboni coming on RHONY as the first Black housewife, there was a lot weighing on her shoulders. With a background as a lawyer, news analyst and moderator, Eboni was more than qualified to hold her own in a debate with the shade-throwing cast. But with RHONY season 13 coming on the heels of nationwide protests amid heightened racial tensions, it set the tone for a number of conversations centered around race and racism. Eboni dished out educational talks on white fragility and microaggressions, while the predominantly white cast listened and learned.
But with all the teachable moments Eboni has had on the show, she has been under fire from show fans who just want her to lighten up and stop making everything so serious. During Eboni's recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the Bravo start addressed criticism about her being "too preachy" on the show. "My answer is simply this. I’m a little bit of a preacher, and I wear that as a badge of honor. And I’m a little bit of a teacher too,” Eboni told WWHL host Andy Cohen. The question came after a number of tense scenes aired on the show between her and her co-stars.
After being confronted by Leah McSweeney about how "intimidating" she can be, Eboni explained that she only wanted to build "authentic connections with the women." With Eboni having such a strong background in public speaking and advocating for social justice, her way of building authentic connections was a lot different than what the RHONY ladies were used to. The show recently showed a heated exchange between RHONY's Eboni and Ramona Singer that stemmed from Ramona's avoidance of talking about politics. After things got more serious in tone, Ramona questioned how Eboni could care so much about suffering considering how successful Eboni is. It was only right for Eboni to turn the conversation into another teachable moment due to Ramona's blatant ignorance of the remark. “Ramona’s saying something that a lot of people who look at me feel, which is you talk about Black Lives Matter and you talk about black subordination of life, but I’m looking and I’m seeing a first-class existence," Eboni explained.
Many have understood Eboni's need to explain and defend herself on the show. But it was during her Harlem Renaissance party where she started to rub viewers the wrong way. Many took to social media to blast the RHONY newbie for "preaching" at her co-stars way too much. It's good that Eboni is taking the criticism in stride.
The Real Housewives of New York City airs Tuesdays at 9pm on Bravo.
