Black Widow's Red Room Defeated Hydra Long Before Captain America

Warning: This post contains Black Widow spoilers.

Black Widow reveals the Red Room defeated Hydra long before Captain America. The history of the Marvel Universe is one of gods and monsters, superheroes and secret societies. These forces have operated in the shadows throughout the twentieth century, but since Tony Stark outed himself as Iron Man they've waged war openly.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier revealed the truth about one such shadowy force. Hydra, founded by the Red Skull during the Second World, had not been destroyed after all; rather, it had transformed into what Arnim Zola called a "beautiful parasite," a cancer that grew within organizations such as S.H.I.E.L.D. over the years. They believed humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom, but the war had taught them that freedom could not be taken. "Humanity needed to surrender its freedom willingly," Zola observed. But it seems Project Insight was not their first attempt to take over the world - and their earlier try had been foiled by a rival secret society.

According to Black Widow, before they began working on Project Insight they focused on the idea of controlling people's minds using a cocktail of chemicals. The experiments appear to have been an outgrowth of the CIA's secret project MKUltra, and they were conducted at a secret laboratory in Ohio. And by 1995 they had succeeded in finding a way to rob people of their freedom of will but, fortunately, they had reckoned with a rival force.

The Red Room had learned of Hydra's experiments at the North Institute. Although the Red Room had been founded under the Soviet Union, after its collapse General Dreykov had presumably begun to transform it into his own empire - and he saw the potential of Hydra's chemical tricks. And so he had Red Guardian infiltrate the North Institute, stealing Hydra's prize and burning the laboratories to the ground.

There is a certain irony to this; long before Captain America ever defeated Hydra, they were being foiled by rival secret societies. If not for General Dreykov and the Red Room, Hydra would have conquered the world back in the 1990s. Thankfully, Dreykov was far less ambitious than Hydra, because for all his claims to power he also wanted to remain in the shadows, and so was always wary of going too far. While he undoubtedly worked hard to redirect the world's development in the direction he wished it to take, he was content with only controlling a handful of people and a small number of operatives; Hydra would probably have preferred to dump their chemicals in the water supply and literally take over the world. For decades, General Dreykov was the lesser of two evils - until Hydra was brought down by Captain America, and he too fell foul of Black Widow.
