Game Of Thrones Meets Harry Potter: 5 Friendships That Would Work (& 5 That Would Turn Ugly)

The fantasy TV series Game of Thrones and the fantasy film series Harry Potter have long captured the imagination of fans. There are similarities between the two franchises, such as magical creatures and characters that scheme behind others' backs, and these have led fans to speculate which characters would get along if the two worlds were suddenly merged.

While some duos could really work, not all these friendships would be smooth sailing... Here are the best and worst of the possibilities.

10 Would Work: Neville Longbottom & Tommen Baratheon

Neville is kind-hearted and soft-spoken, a lot like Tommen. Tommen is good at heart and is very different from his Lannister family, ranking low in fighting ability within his family. His different nature is shown when Tommen has difficulty sleeping when he moves into his brother Joffrey's room, which is decorated with gory hunting trophies. Tommen and Neville are not the most physically threatening people, but they stand up to do the right thing when the situation calls for it.

Tommen could use a good influence in his life, as he is surrounded by the manipulative Lannisters and Tyrells in King's Landing, and Neville becomes a teacher at Hogwarts later in life, so Neville could be a perfect guiding influence for Tommen.

9 Would Turn Ugly: Draco Malfoy & Joffrey Baratheon

A typical pair of Slytherins, doing evil deeds comes naturally to these characters, although Joffrey is certainly more bloodthirsty than Draco. While Draco cannot killing Dumbledore and has serious doubts about his allegiances during the Battle of Hogwarts, Joffrey has no problem killing anyone.

If these characters met during their younger years, they might have been good friends, bullying the other kids and enacting cruelties on people. However, the friendship would turn sour since Draco repents his evil deeds, while Joffrey would never do such a thing.

8 Would Work: Rubeus Hagrid & Daenerys Targaryen

Taking care of magical creatures comes naturally to Hagrid and Dany, and they are both kind to their dragons. Dany would not have let Hagrid get rid of Norbert, but if she had to, she could help bring Norbert back home to Hagrid. Dany would also be happy to be helping one of the most overlooked characters in the Harry Potter franchise, as Hagrid is discriminated against due to his giant heritage and Dany doesn't stand for injustice.

Hagrid takes care of the kids that need him, always willing to help Ron, Harry, and Hermione in whatever adventures they are up to, and his kindness might help keep Dany on the right track in life.

7 Would Turn Ugly: Ginny Weasley & Arya Stark

Ginny in the books is an avid Quidditch player and a fearless warrior, much like Arya. Book Ginny would have lots in common with Arya since they are surrounded by brothers and their families are both very close to each other.

Although Ginny can fight when the need arises, Arya is much tougher, when it comes down to it. They are also both stubborn and could butt heads over time.

6 Would Work: Hermione Granger & Samwell Tarly

These book lovers would spend hours in the library together, finding out all they can about their respective realms. Both Hermione and Samwell feel different from their families. Hermione's muggle parents can't connect with her in areas of magic, and she finally has to erase their memories of her to keep them safe. Samwell's family overlooks him in favor of his younger brother Dickon, and his father sends him to the Wall to be rid of him. Hermione and Samwell could connect over their shared feeling of being invisible to those around them.

They are however different in their approach to combat. Hermione is a Gryffindor and brave enough to fight, whereas Samwell would prefer to work things out with words.

5 Would Turn Ugly: Severus Snape & Petyr Baelish

Snape and Baelish pursue their own goals under the guise of helping others, and although they wish to be trusted, do not treat those around them with any kindness at all. They are schemers and are not afraid to backstab people to get their way. They are also both motivated by love - Snape for Lily Evans, and Baelish for Catelyn Stark.

This friendship might seem fun, as Baelish would undoubtedly find many uses for Snape's potions (especially the Veritaserum), but in the end, the men are too different: Baelish's scheming breaks down everyone's trust in him, but Snape is redeemed and seen as a good guy all along. Baelish wouldn't work well with someone who may end up betraying him, and the two may end up fighting.

4 Would Work: Harry Potter & Jon Snow

Both orphans with parents that died before they were born, Harry and Jon have a lot in common. Jon's stoic and straight-laced personality might clash a bit with Harry's sassy dialogue and explosions of emotion, but their rough upbringing would resonate with each other and may develop into a good friendship if given a chance.

Jon also cares for his adopted little brothers Bran and Rickon Stark, so he might take care of Harry like a sibling. Jon's role in the Night's Watch and as King in the North would be extremely dangerous, especially in the later seasons of the show, but Harry is proficient enough in magic that he could help Jon fight against the White Walkers.

3 Would Turn Ugly: Luna Lovegood & Melisandre

Luna and Melisandre are both super weird witches, even for the Wizarding World and Westeros. Luna would introduce Melisandre to weirder creatures than the shadow demon, and Melisandre would introduce Luna to the dark arts, meaning that both of them would be a terrible influence on each other.

It might be fun to see both of these women do magic together, although Melisandre's creepy dark magic might become too much for Luna, as she witnessed her mother Pandora die when attempting a difficult, experimental spell.

2 Would Work: Minerva McGonagall & Olenna Tyrell

Both of these women are very much alike, as they are both extremely loyal, dutiful, quick-witted, and have the ability to harbor deep grudges against anyone who harms their family. Minerva defends Hogwarts to the best of her ability and retaliates against Umbridge when the new headmistress harms the students. Olenna is a brilliantly sharp woman that is nicknamed the Queen of Thorns thanks to her savage insults and willingness to do terrible things to advance her family's station in life.

The gossip and chats between these two women would be brilliant fun to watch, and a fast friendship would be formed between them both.

1 Would Turn Ugly: Bellatrix Lestrange & Cersei Lannister

Bellatrix is an extremely devoted woman who goes to great lengths to earn approval from her superiors, which would be perfect for the villainous Cersei to manipulate. Bellatrix's firepower would be a benefit to Cersei, especially in getting rid of her enemies, and their friendship would be mutually beneficial as Bellatrix would be serving a genuine Queen instead of just a self-proclaimed Dark Lord.

Both women have been imprisoned in their respective series, and both devoted themselves to causes after escaping: Bellatrix followed Voldemort, and Cersei dedicated herself to revenge. Still, eventually, they would likely turn on one another in their quest for power.
