Henry Cavill Tried & Failed To Beat The Witcher 3 On Hardest Difficulty

Although Henry Cavill - the actor who plays the prominent role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's The Witcher series - is a well-known player and fan of the Witcher games, he confessed that he tried and failed to beat The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Death March, the game's hardest difficulty. The revelation emerged during an interview with the actor as part of 2021's WitcherCon.

Video game developer CD Projekt Red and streaming platform Netflix joined together this year to host the first ever WitcherCon, a digital convention celebrating all things Witcher. The two streams on July 9 provided fans with information ranging from insight on The Witcher TV series' production to updates regarding next-gen upgrades for The Witcher 3. The first stream concluded with "Tales from the White Wolf: A Conversation With Henry Cavill," hosted by Josh Horowitz. Though the conversation largely centered around Cavill's role in the Netflix series, the discussion often shifted to his experiences with the books and games.

During his WitcherCon appearance (via Netflix), Henry Cavill revealed that he couldn't beat The Witcher 3 on the notoriously brutal Death March difficulty, the hardest difficulty in the game. Cavill notes that he's beaten the game a number of times on the second hardest difficulty, Blood and Broken Bones. However, when he attempted to play on Death March, the difficulty that Cavill describes as "the not fun way to play the game," it apparently took him "three goes to get past the Ghouls in the beginning." "I was not impressed with myself," Cavill remarked to Horowitz. Not to be dissuaded, Cavill says that he may try playing on Blood and Broken Bones once more to regain his skill before returning to Death March. He insists that he does want to play The Witcher 3 at least once more in order to experience the expansions for the first time.

Aside from his struggles with Death March, Cavill revealed much more about his history with the Witcher games. For instance, he first got into the RPG series with the lesser-known The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, though he stopped playing it once he got too busy. The Witcher 3, Cavill declares, is definitely the one that got him hooked. Graphics apparently played an integral role in that experience, and he now enjoys playing The Witcher 3 on the elusive GTX 3090 graphics card. Listening to Cavill speak about his experiences, one can tell that he's a true fan and player of the Witcher games, not just someone trying to pretend for the sake of garnering goodwill.

Though Henry Cavill failed to conquer Death March difficulty, this doesn't speak too harshly toward his skills as a player. Indeed, he's still beaten the game on Blood and Broken Bones, a noteworthy feat to say the least. What's unclear is whether Cavill used the New Game + feature that was later added to the game, allowing players to tackle the harder difficulties with some of their skills and weapons earned from a previous playthrough. Regardless, players who think they're up to the task can attempt to outdo Henry Cavill by trying out Death March difficulty for themselves.
