Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League #65
The latest issue of Justice League has revealed its new Deathstroke isn't Slade Wilson. The DC Universe’s most famous mercenary has long functioned as a dark reflection of Bruce Wayne. A master of hand-to-hand combat with a taste for the finer things in life – who comes with his own military-trained, long-suffering manservant and mentor – Slade has even shared an animated movie actor with the Dark Knight, with The LEGO Batman Movie’s Will Arnett voicing him in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies.
The famed mercenary will soon mirror Batman in yet another way, as he recruits a global team of mercs in September’s Deathstroke Inc. #1. It's an exciting development for the character that's been a long time coming. What's more, it looks like the titular team’s first new member may have just appeared—in the pages of Justice League #65.
Penned by Brian Michael Bendis and penciled by Steve Pugh, this issue finds Green Arrow and Black Canary confronting the mysterious former A.R.G.U.S. operative “Daemon Rose,” who claims to be Lois Lane’s brother. However, their meeting is cut short by the sudden appearance of Deathstroke, who’s targeting the young Lane. As the sharp-eyed Green Arrow immediately deduces, however, this is not the Slade Wilson Deathstroke. This begs the question, “Which Deathstroke is it?”
With Deathstroke Inc. about to debut, the answer may not be long in coming. What’s even more intriguing is that Justice League #65 sees the new Deathstroke taking down Dinah Lance, who will partner with Wilson when his next title bows in September. Will Black Canary be pitted against Oliver Queen and the Justice League as she takes up with a new band of outlaws? It certainly seems likely, which could have major implications for the team going forward.
All told, the Deathstroke reveal in the latest issue of Justice League should only increase anticipation for Deathstroke Inc. and the character's future in DC Comics. Slade Wilson remains a pivotal villain for Green Arrow and the Justice League, and it's clear that isn't changing anytime soon. It will be exciting to see him and his new team step into the spotlight. The heroes will have their work cut out for them, but it should be a thrilling battle. Readers will find out more about what's ahead for Deathstroke and the others when the first issue of Deathstroke Inc. bows on September 28.
