Samsung has confirmed a new wave of S Pen styli are coming that are specifically designed with foldable phones in mind. The company's next-generation S Pens could also open the door for its Galaxy phone lineup to inherit exclusive features that are more prominently found in its Note series. Leaks of Samsung's next foldable phone have already provided a sneak-peek at what consumers can expect ahead of the upcoming Unpacked event.
One of the ways the Galaxy Z Fold 3 could improve on its predecessor is through S Pen support. The S Pen has been around for a long time now, but it has yet to be incorporated in any of Samsung's foldable phones, despite models like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 featuring enough screen real estate that would be perfect for a stylus. Instead, S Pen support is mostly limited to the Note series, certain Galaxy tablets, Galaxy Book laptops and more recently, the Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, reports of the S Pen's expanding support is starting to suggest otherwise, and now Samsung is bringing the S Pen to its future foldable phones.
In a press release, Samsung teased the direction of where its popular stylus will be heading in the future through the arrival of a new S Pen variant. The company revealed that it will be showcasing the “first-ever” S Pen “designed specifically” to work with foldable phones during its next Unpacked event. Samsung also hinted at some other “foldable surprises” to come on August 11, as well as expanding features only found in its Note lineup to other models.
Given the plastic-layered inner display of folding models like the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which make the device prone to scratches, having a pointed stylus constantly tapping on the surface might not sound like such a good idea. However, Samsung might be creating a stylus that can circumvent this issue, helping the highly-anticipated next foldable to close the gap on both the flagship Galaxy S and Note lineups. Having the capability of transforming into a high-end tablet while still performing like a flagship smartphone could really help to make the Galaxy Z Fold 3 become a great all-in-one device, especially considering the expected aesthetic improvements as well.
As S Pen support becomes less exclusive to the Galaxy Note lineup, Samsung can expand the features of the stylus even further, turning the pen into more of a universal and practical accessory. So far, the only smartphone model that supports the S Pen outside of the Note series is the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but after Samsung's recent announcement, stylus support could end up coming to many more compact devices like the Galaxy Z Flip 3, which is already looking promising.
