Marvel's Avengers' Black Panther Will Be Much Different From the MCU's

Square Enix is gearing up for the release of Marvel's Avengers upcoming expansion Black Panther — War for Wakanda, but fans of the MCU and the comics will be treated to a very different Black Panther. In a new livestream, actor Christopher Judge and developers Hannah MacLeod and Evan Narcisse spoke about the character, Judge's interpretation, and what will set the game's Black Panther apart from its other iterations.

Crystal Dynamic's Marvel's Avengers launched in 2020 and received a mixed reception from gamers due to the title's focus on online multiplayer, though it does have a single-player campaign that takes around 10 hours to complete. Marvel's Avengers has struggled with everything from server issues to gameplay glitches since launch, with one of the most worrying problems being a bug that displayed IP addresses of Marvel's Avengers players. Despite its problems, hopes are high for the Black Panther-themed expansion.

A recent Crystal Dynamics developer stream went in-depth with Judge and Narcisse, narrative consultant for Marvel's Avengers: Black Panther - War for Wakanda expansion. The 80-minute stream was summarised by Reddit user Billyb311 (via MP1st), who highlighted some surprising comments from Judge. While the actor provided his voice work during at-home isolation, he got into better shape for the role, losing 32lbs to help him better embody the character. As for research for the role, Judge admitted he didn't need to do a lot, having been a comic book fan and collector since the 1960s. It also emerged that Judge had been recording for the role for the last year and a half, which provided unique challenges as he couldn't play off other actors in the scenes. Despite the issues Judge faced, he is proud of his role in the expansion, noting that his favorite line was, unsurprisingly, "Wakanda forever."

Discussing differences between the MCU version of Black Panther and the Marvel's Avengers expansion, Narcisse confirmed that the game's T'Challa will be different from both the movies and comics. According to the developer, the game's Black Panther will have a "different personality", being "more arrogant and more aloof," as well as more aggressive and older than his movie counterpart. Game writer MacLeod also confirmed that the character's "science side" will be explored more in the expansion than it has been in the MCU. Judge said that he wanted his interpretation of Black Panther to be judged "on its own merits," and not compared to previous iterations of the character.

Judge, who also played Kratos in 2018's God of War, will be the central character in the Wakanda expansion, which is believed to add another seven to eight hours of story to the existing Marvel's Avengers campaign. Players looking to try Marvel's Avengers simply for the new expansion will have a sizeable amount of content to work through. Accounting for previously released DLC and the main story from the base game, Marvel's Avengers: Black Panther - War for Wakanda should bring the total playtime to around 25 hours.

Story details for War for Wakanda are scarce, but the world itself should be enough to delight Marvel fans. The expansion will feature lush and thriving natural environments never seen in the game before, introducing a whole new world with Wakanda. The upcoming add-on, which won't reuse any existing game assets from Marvel's Avengers, has been created with its own unique look and feel in mind, which will hopefully be a breath of fresh air for its players.
