Reservation Dogs Trailer: Taika Waititi's Coming-of-Age Crime Comedy

FX and Hulu have revealed the first trailer for Reservation Dogs, a new show from Taika Waititi and Sterlin Harjo. The series stars D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Devery Jacobs, Paulina Alexis, and Lane Factor, with a guest cast roster set to include Tamara Podemski, Zahn McClarnon, Macon Blair, Kirk Fox, Matty Cardarople, Dallas Goldtooth, Bobby Lee, Lil Mike, and Funny Bone. In addition to co-creating the series, Waititi and Harjo are executive producing alongside Garrett Basch, who previously worked with the former on FX's What We Do in the Shadows and the upcoming sports dramedy Next Goal Wins.

Reservation Dogs is a half-hour comedy centered on the exploits of four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who steal, rob, and save in order to escape their small town and journey to California. The series picks up a year after the death of Daniel, the fifth member of their group, and will explore their grieving processes and struggles healing with the mundanity of living in their small town. The show was first announced to be in development in late 2019 with Waititi confirming it shortly after. He and Harjo co-wrote the pilot, with Harjo also directing it.

With just under a month to go until the series arrives, FX has debuted the first full trailer for Reservation Dogs. The video offers a look at the Oklahoma-based story and characters as well as the self-aware and R-rated humor from the coming-of-age series. Check out the trailer below:

On both the big and small screens, Waititi has frequently shown a strength in delivering subversive takes on whatever genre he finds himself working in, but Reservation Dogs is certainly looking to be one of his most intriguing projects. With the help of his co-creator and award-winning Native American filmmaker Harjo, the duo have put a spotlight on an area of American culture infrequently explored in film or television, and the result looks to be a winning effort. From its self-aware humor about Indigenous stereotypes to its delightfully offbeat Oklahoma setting, the trailer is certainly pointing towards a unique viewing experience for audiences.

Though it may not come as much of a surprise at this point in time, one of the most exciting things about the Reservation Dogs trailer is the R-rated profanity and humor on display throughout. Donald Glover's Atlanta got the ball rolling for FX to fight against censors, and with the series set to premiere on Hulu, that speed bump was even further removed, allowing Waititi and Harjo to go into whatever direction they pleased. The wait is almost over as Reservation Dogs will premiere on FX on Hulu on August 9.
