School For Good & Evil Video Reveals Production Has Wrapped

Netflix unveils a new behind-the-scenes video from The School of Good and Evil revealing production has wrapped on the fantasy film adaptation. The Paul Feig-helmed film centers on Sophie and Agatha, best friends who find themselves taken to the titular academy where boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains. The duo find their fortunes reversed as the brighter Sophie is picked for the School for Evil and grim aesthetic Agatha chosen for the School for Good, putting them on a path to discover who they really are and putting their friendship to the test.

Development on a film adaptation of Soman Chainani's School for Good and Evil novels began as early as 2011 with studios eyeing to build a new franchise prior to the first novel's release. After partnering with Roth Films and Jane Startz Productions for an adaptation, Universal Pictures acquired the rights to the film in 2013 in a seven-figure deal with Chainani and Malia Scotch Marmo set to write the script, though this project would languish in development hell until Netflix acquired it early last year with Feig signing on to direct. The Bridesmaids director quickly teamed with casting director Fiona Weir to build an ensemble roster of talent led by Sophia Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie as well as Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Yeoh.

Given fans have been waiting over five years for Chainani's acclaimed novels to find life on the screen, the news of School for Good and Evil wrapping production should come as exciting news. Additionally, the film's three-month production timeline should be a testament to the grand scale of the production on the young adult fantasy title, with the new video offering a nice tease of some of the larger set pieces to be seen. While only a brief glimpse, attentive viewers can see a group of cast members attending the Annual Never Ball, which led to a pivotal turning point in the original novel.

Though having tried his hand at the blockbuster genre with his female-fronted Ghostbusters filmThe School for Good and Evil marks Feig's first foray into the young adult and fantasy genres and the footage and images seen thus far certainly point to a strong effort from the director. Already having faithfully captured the visual design of the characters, the close involvement of Chainani should ensure their personality and stories remain just as true. Only time will tell when the film arrives on Netflix next year.
