PS4 Firmware Update Beta Reveals Ability to View PS5 Trophies

Firmware Update 9.00 has entered the beta phase for PlayStation 4 testers; one of the more notable changes will allow PS4 players to view their PlayStation 5 Trophy list. While remote play allows PS4 players to control Sony's newer console, the two systems aren't always perfectly in sync, evidenced by the fact that PS5 Trophies don't appear on the older hardware.

It's not yet clear why this remains an issue; after all, no such problem cropped up during the transition from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4. Yet, the seeming oversight for the new console generation could be a lingering hiccup related to the PlayStation Trophy system's overhaul in late 2020, which boosted level ranges from 1 - 100 to 999. The new structure meant that a player who'd previously reached Trophy level 12 received a boost to somewhere in the range of level 200 following the update. Now it seems Sony is focused on smoothing over some of the rougher edges.

The PS4's next major System Software Update, 9.00, has entered beta. Push Square reports that beta participants recently received an email outlining the list of changes featured in 9.00, which includes the ability to view Trophies for PS5 games on PS4. Another change will let those who own Message groups delete them via the Options menu. And if a player blocks someone, the former will have the option to leave the group that both parties occupy. The final addition should see parent accounts receive notifications on PS4 and in the PlayStation App whenever a child account requests permission to play certain titles.

These count as incremental changes, sure, but they all add up to an improved experience. The Trophy change will especially serve to further unify the PlayStation ecosystem across PS4 and PS5 platforms. Interestingly, these aren't the only Trophy-related adjustments Sony has in beta, either.

PlayStation 5's first firmware update beta went live yesterday, July 29, and most importantly allows participants to try out M.2 SSD support. Trophy Hunters can expect quite the treat as well, since details about the beta hint that a vertical Trophy list display on PS5 may see the light of day in the future. PlayStation 5's horizontal Trophy display has frustrated many players since launch; fortunately, this wrong will one day be set right.
