Bad Batch Explains How The Empire's Cloning Started (Before Grogu & Snoke)

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Bad Batch episode 14, "War-Mantle"

In the latest episode of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, the new animated series sets up the Empire's cloning plans years before The Mandalorian's Grogu or Supreme Leader Snoke, the cloned puppet of Emperor Palpatine. Set in the days just after the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire, Imperial command began Project War-Mantle in earnest, shutting down the cloning efforts on Kamino and instead focusing on recruited stormtroopers to become the new force of the Empire's might. However, a rather interesting development occurs just as the Empire is preparing to leave the planet.

In previous episodes of The Bad Batch, it was revealed that Vice Admiral Rampart had been put in charge of War-Mantle by Admiral Tarkin himself, the future Grand Moff. Under Rampart's command, the Empire transitioned away from the former clones of the Republic, and began a transition to recruited stormtroopers from across the galaxy, albeit being trained by the surviving clone troopers in the interim. However, this naturally drew concern from Prime Minister Lama Su and his chief scientist Nala Se, both of whom hoped that hiring bounty hunters to bring back the rogue Bad Batch and Omega would have held the key to making themselves invaluable to the Empire.

However, the former Clone Force 99 proved to be too elusive, and time ran out for Kamino as the Empire began to shut it down. Seeing that the end was near in the latest episode, Lama Su instructed Nala Se to gather their research and key personnel so that they might escape the planet, rightly believing that the Empire wouldn't allow them to continue their work for other clients. While Nala Se was unfortunately caught by the Imperials, Rampart decided to let her live claiming that he had use for her as a leading scientist (though the same couldn't be said for Lama Su). However, Nala Se's integration into the Empire carries some large implications, as it sets up the future cloning work involving Grogu as well as the creation of Snoke (and the cloned body of Emperor Palpatine himself).

It's safe to assume that Nala Se's work within the Empire leads to the cloned body of the Emperor, which he transferred his consciousness into after his death on the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi, biding his time in a body that continued to fail him due to his immense power in the dark side. Not only that, but the Kaminoan technology and research from Nala Se more than likely aided in the midi-chlorian experiments conducted on Grogu by the Imperial Remnant's Dr. Pershing (who had confirmed connections to Kamino) as well as the clone creation known as Snoke, the Supreme Leader of the First Order and Palpatine's figurehead puppet.

It will be interesting to see if this episode was the last fans will see of Nala Se, or if her new work will be shown in any capacity going forward. It would certainly be interesting if the Emperor approached her himself about creating his clone body. In any case, fans will just have to wait and see what's next for Kamino and Clone Force 99 as The Bad Batch nears its season finale.
