Warning: contains spoilers for The Flash #772!
In the latest issue of DC's The Flash, Wally West teams up with Michael Holt's Mister Terrific, the world's smartest man. However, this new team-up actually comes in the form of a surprising job offer rather than as the answer to some big new threat. Apparently, there are plenty of things for Wally to work on at Mister Terrific's headquarters in Central City, and it seems Dr. Holt is keen to have Wally working for him, offering to reinvent the way the Fastest Man Alive handles his superhuman adventures alongside his civilian identity.
Previous issues of The Flash saw Wally on a roller coaster of an adventure through the Speed Force, as it had chosen him to help remove a blockage that proved to be speedster villain Savitar. While Wally had considered retiring as a hero prior to this mission, it soon became apparent that being the Flash is an intrinsic part of who Wally is, and who he always will be. As such, Wally decided to remain the Speed Force's chosen and favorite Flash - a role that sadly doesn't pay the bills or keep a roof over his family's heads.
Seeing as being the Fastest Man Alive doesn't pay all that well on its own, Wally has to find a job in Flash #772, eventually landing a gig as a mechanic in the issue from Jeremy Adams and Will Conrad. This is where Mister Terrific comes in, revealing that he's Wally's new employer and offering him a job at his flagship company instead. At the Terrifictech HQ in Central City, he introduces Wally to a variety of doctors and scientists he'll be working with. While Wally is initially skeptical and feels underqualified, Mister Terrific is quick to remind him that not only is he qualified, but that this professional team-up can make him a far more effective hero while also allowing him to thrive as a gifted engineer, reminding him, "You're more than a person who can move at the speed of sound."
Thanks to Holt's encouragement (and a sizable paycheck), Wally agrees and takes the job. Unlike a regular comic team-up, Flash and Mister Terrific's deal permanently makes Wally's life as a hero easier. It's also a pretty smart move on Mister Terrific's part to have the Flash on his payroll, considering all of his company's recent studies into temporal anomalies and the multiverse. Who better than a speedster who can physically travel between realities to help out as an engineer? While the job also comes with many perks and benefits, the biggest one is the freedom Mister Terrific gives Wally to leave whenever he needs to - something Flash immediately takes advantage of to go fight Heatwave.
It's going to be pretty interesting to see how this new workplace team-up plays out, though for all intents and purposes Wally working for Mister Terrific seems like a no-brainer. Wally has an ability to operate freely that heroes only usually achieve by revealing their civilian identities, as well as a genius ally to call on and the equipment and expertise to devise bespoke solutions to his various physics-defying villains. Here's hoping the new Flash stays in this dream team-up with Mister Terrific long into the future.
